Name: Damini Patel
Undergraduate: BS in Biology at IU Bloomington
Where were you prior to MSHM? (Undergrad major, undergrad university, job?)
Before the MSHM program, I was an undergraduate student majoring in Biology at Indiana University Bloomington. With my biology degree, I hoped to attend medical school; however, after shadowing several physicians, I realized I was not interested in direct patient care but more interested in becoming an innovative leader who can improve the overall patient experience.
What are you most excited about for this coming year?
I am most excited about the practicum experience as I pursue the MSHM degree. I hope to acquire valuable experience, knowledge, and skills I can apply to my future career.
In addition, I look forward to learning more about Quantitative Methods with Aaron Perry. Data analysis is crucial for small and large organizations as it can provide valuable insights into resource allocation, quality improvement, and financial management; I hope to become proficient in the subject as it can serve me well throughout my career.
What does it mean to you to “Lead for the Greater Good”?
To lead for the Greater Good, I plan to serve a purpose beyond myself. Instead of focusing my actions and time on my own advancement, I plan to focus on how my actions will improve the greater good.
What types of roles are looking for post-graduation?
Post-graduation, I envision an exciting career in healthcare consulting. I plan to use the skills and knowledge I learn within the MSHM program, such as process improvement, marketing, healthcare finance, operations management, and quantitative analysis, to excel in the field!
Do you feel supported by program faculty and staff?
The MSHM program faculty and staff have been very supportive. As I began this program, my lack of experience led me to fear courses. Luckily, professors such as Arron Perry and Steve Eller have constantly reminded me that I overcome any obstacle I am dealt with and that I belong here.
What is your favorite part of the MSHM program thus far?
My favorite part of the MSHM program thus far has been the supportive cohort. The speed at which we bonded and have each other’s back is astonishing. In addition, I can not only reach out to my cohort for guidance with academic concerns but also reach out for personal support. This program will undoubtedly leave me with great lifelong friends.
