Where were you prior to MSHM? (Undergrad major, undergrad university, job?
I completed my undergraduate degree in Healthcare Management and Policy with minors in public health and global health promotion. During my gap year, I worked as a certified nurse assistant (CNA) in a long-term care facility, where I realized that I wanted to make a broader impact beyond individual patient care. This led me to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare management because a managerial role would allow me to positively impact not only my patients but also my employees, the organization, and the community.
What are you most excited about for this coming year?
What excites me most is the practicum experience. I’m eager for this opportunity because it will enable me to apply the knowledge I’ve gained in my classes and enhance my skills through hands-on experience. This valuable opportunity will prepare me for future roles by allowing me to learn from healthcare professionals, expand my network, and help to address the real-life challenges within the healthcare industry.
What does it mean to you to “Lead for the Greater Good”?
For me this means to be part of the solution. As an aspiring healthcare leader, I aim to cultivate a transformative work culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging and is empowered to reach their full potential. I believe that when individuals feel valued and included, they are more likely to contribute their unique perspectives and talents, which will lead to innovative solutions and improved patient care.
What types of roles are looking for post-graduation?
After graduation, I am primarily seeking roles in project management and process/quality improvement. These positions excite me because they offer the opportunity to optimize workflows, enhance the quality and effectiveness of care, and ultimately improve employee job satisfaction. By focusing on these areas, I hope to contribute to creating a more efficient and supportive healthcare environment with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient outcomes through culturally responsive care.
Do you feel supported by program faculty and staff?
Absolutely! April, Lyndsey, and Darbe have been instrumental in my professional development by consistently making themselves available to listen and support me through any challenges I face. They foster a safe environment where I feel comfortable asking questions, knowing they will never judge me and will always offer their genuine support.
Do you feel connected to your peers (in your cohort)?
Yes, despite our different academic backgrounds and career interests, we always support each other by fostering a safe space. I also appreciate that we connect outside the classroom and participate in various activities together.
What is your favorite part of the MSHM program thus far?
My favorite part of the program so far has been the guest speakers and the value capture training program. It’s been enlightening to explore the various career paths in healthcare and see how these professionals have navigated their journeys. Additionally, the Value Capture program has given me practical experience in identifying and addressing process gaps using lean management, the five system improvement questions, and A3 thinking.
