Amy is the practicum preceptor for Community Health at IU Health and the Sojourn House!
Amy is the Director of Community Health at IU Health South Central Region and a founding Board of Directors member for Sojourn House. She has been a nurse for 25 years in the Bloomington community, the last 12 years being spent in Community Health at IU Health Bloomington. She reflects on her time there…
“During my time at Community Health, my eyes have opened to what issues plague our community. I have seen how poverty and substance abuse can create more circumstances for vulnerability to trafficking. Human trafficking happens right before our eyes every day in this community. I worked together with other women who have a passion for this issue and created Sojourn House.”
A current MSHM student is working on fundraising and program planning for the residential side of Sojourn House. Right now, Sojourn House has a case manager that works with vulnerable and/or trafficked women in the community. Soon, we will be opening our residential side. Elizabeth is working on the intake process. She is also working on a silent auction in November and her capstone project will be planning and seeing through a Gala in the Spring. She also helped plan a 5K that took place in September.
I’ve precepted lots of students in the past from other programs. It always felt like about the time things were going well, they would be finished. The MSHM program is the entire school year, allowing for more follow-through or finality of projects. Students are also getting ready to head into the workforce, so this is not just a class, this is their final preparation.
I love working with students. They bring fresh eyes to projects and new ideas. That fresh look is so valuable.”
We appreciate you so much, Amy! Thank you for everything you do for this program, the community, and these vulnerable members of our community!
