Name: Lindsey Howard
Graduation Year: 2025
Q: Where were you prior to MSHM? (Undergrad major, undergrad university, job?)
A: I earned my bachelor’s degree in Community Health from Indiana University. During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a Volunteer Recruitment Specialist at Thriving Connections, a local Bloomington non-profit that is part of the South-Central Community Action Program (SCCAP). Their mission focuses on helping families living in poverty by fostering personal and community connections for lasting change. Additionally, I was a Youth Development Professional at the Lincoln Street Boys and Girls Club, where I developed my passion for serving others.
Q: What are you most excited about for this coming year?
A: I’m really excited about working on my capstone project at my practicum site and participating in the Kelley Washington Program!
Q: What does it mean to you to “Lead for the Greater Good”?
A: Leading for the greater good means using your influence and actions selflessly to serve others and prioritize the well-being of the community. It requires humility to understand others’ needs, strength of character to act with integrity, and the courage to make decisions that foster kindness, equity, and lasting positive change.
Q: What types of roles are you looking for post-graduation?
A: I’m passionate about serving others and building trust within my community. I want to promote health and improve access to care, focusing on equity and well-being. Through my practicum with IU Health Community Health, I’ve worked on health equity initiatives, community needs assessments, and implementation strategies. I envision a future in community outreach and engagement within hospitals or health systems, where I can make a meaningful impact.
Q: Do you feel supported by program faculty and staff?
A: Absolutely! The faculty and staff have been incredibly supportive throughout the MSHM program. I was initially concerned that the online format might hinder communication, but that hasn’t been the case. The faculty are highly responsive, genuinely invested in our success, and provide valuable guidance. They go above and beyond to support us academically and personally.
Q: Do you feel connected to your peers (in your cohort)?
A: Yes, I feel a strong connection with my cohort! Our small group size allows us to get to know each other well and offer mutual support. Even though the program is online, we meet weekly on Zoom, which provides opportunities for meaningful discussions and helps us build personal connections.
Q: What is your favorite part of the MSHM program so far?
A: My favorite part has been my practicum role with IU Health Community Health. It has been incredibly rewarding to work under an inspiring preceptor and gain hands-on experience. Beyond the work itself, I’ve learned important lessons about leadership, resilience, and overcoming challenges—skills that extend beyond the job. Serving my community and building relationships with staff and volunteers has strengthened my passion for making a difference in healthcare.
