Name: Raegene Thomas
Graduation year: 2022
Q: What project(s) did you work on at your practicum site? Where was your practicum site?
During my practicum at Genneserat Free Clinics, I was a Marketing and Business Development Fellow. My primary focus was on amplifying brand awareness and bolstering engagement among the clinic’s donors, funders, and patient population. My projects included spearheading and implementing an annual marketing plan, developing a new website, crafting marketing collateral, and deploying social media marketing strategies.
Q: What skills did you use most at your practicum site (that you learned through your MSHM coursework)?
My practicum heavily tapped into my project management and stakeholder management skills, which were sharpened through my MSHM coursework. These skills were instrumental in navigating and successfully executing my practicum projects, and I still leverage them in my current work as well.
Q: Have you secured a job (post-graduation)?
Yes, post-graduation I joined Roche Diagnostics as an associate in their Accelerated Development Program. This 2-year program empowers recent graduates to immerse themselves in various impactful business roles within Roche. I started in the Agility Office, focusing on facilitating and advocating agile practices. Currently, I am in my second rotation in Point of Care Marketing, where I’ve had the opportunity to delve into strategizing for our liat product, specifically in enhancing the customer product experience. And in the next couple of weeks, I will transition into my final rotation as an Inside Sales Specialist for our Core Lab franchise.
Q: Did you feel supported by the program faculty and staff?
I felt immensely supported by the program faculty and staff. They are genuinely committed to individual development and student success. Their dedication ensured not only my success within the program but my future career endeavors as well.
Q: What was your favorite part of the MSHM program so far?
The highlight of the MSHM program for me was the Operations Management course, particularly executing a process improvement project addressing a prevalent healthcare issue. My team and I tackled eradicating Black maternal mortality in a Louisiana hospital, which is among some of the highest rates globally. This case was not only deeply educational, but it also shed light on the profound health system inequalities. This project was ultimately key in shaping my ongoing interest and involvement in promoting health equity.
Q: Did you feel connected to your peers (in your cohort)?
Absolutely! My cohort and I prioritized maintaining regular check-ins and attending social events together. This helped create a strong support system between us and enhanced my program experience by fostering a sense of solidarity and shared journey among us.
Q: What is some advice you have for the next generation of MSHM students?
Fully immerse yourself in the MSHM and practicum experience! The program is designed for you to excel in all facets of the healthcare sector. Also, leverage access to your professors and leaders—they are incredibly insightful and knowledgeable and will help propel your learning and future career.
