Nonverbal feedback in Zoom meetings can be a quick and easy way to gauge the meeting. You can ask your students to show their understanding with a quick “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Have you noticed that you could make your Zoom more personal by changing your Zoom reactions’ skin tone? This might help you express yourself in a way that feels more representative of you.
When you’re in a Zoom meeting, click “reactions,” and “…”. Then, in the bottom right-hand corner, you should see the words “skin tone” and a thumbs up emoji. Click the thumbs up emoji, then click the skin tone that best aligns with your own.
As you’re making this emoji update, take the time to inform yourself and/or your students about digital blackface. Watch this video starring Victoria Princewill to learn more about how this impacts nonverbal communication across platforms.
