Southport High School Instructional Media Center chosen to receive the statewide library award. Congratulations!
The Southport High School Instructional Media Center has been selected to
receive the Indiana Library Federation (ILF) 2020 “Everyone Counts” Award.
The ILF “Everyone Counts” Award honors and recognizes any personal or institutional
member who or that has demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
in policies, practices, programs, and/or initiatives.
The Southport High School Instructional Media Center strives to serve all of the 2400+
students and 150+ staff that belong to the Southport Cardinals family. The school
library welcomes everyone to share diverse stories and create a safe haven for
independent thinkers to think, create, share, and grow in their ever-changing world.
Tara Foor (MLS, Indiana University) currently serves as the school library media
specialist since 2014 and attempts to chronicle the adventures in the library on Twitter
at @SopoIMC.
The Southport High School Library is recognized for the statewide award based on the
many activities that help all feel welcome and to grow in their understanding of others.
The Library hosts the Cultures of Southport festival which provides insights into the
lives of the diverse student body in the school and neighborhood. In the library, you
may find students sharing their immigration and ancestry stories on Giant Maps from
National Geographic, studying aspects of science and space through NASA resources,
conversing with local authors, and so much more.
Fellow faculty share how Ms. Foor makes the library the welcoming and learning hub for
students of all abilities and backgrounds. A parent and school board member describes
how the library makes an impact through its monthly book club, #SopoReads, by
exposing students to diverse literature, and through its community programming for
activities related to holidays, distressing, or different cultures. Southport High School
Instructional Media Center is recognized or its outstanding efforts to help “everyone
count.”

Position Announcement: Catalog Librarian, Texas A&M International University, Laredo, TX
Job Description
The Cataloging Librarian, under direction, coordinates the catalog department in the cataloging,
classifying, accessioning, linking, and labeling of library materials so that they are accessible to library
patrons. This position creates and maintains metadata for library materials in all formats and leads the
development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata
schemas for digital collections appropriate for the library’s current and future content management
systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Catalogs and classifies monographic materials of classes using cataloging rules and schedules.
Supervises physical processing of monographic materials in all formats.
● Catalogs and classifies non-State-adopted materials, print or non-print, for the Library, using
classification schedules. Catalogs and classifies State-adopted materials and supervises the
processing of those materials.
● Catalogs theses, honors theses, dissertations, student papers, oral history interviews,
manuscripts, and maps.
● Completes original cataloging, prepares workforms for input onto the online system with proper
fixed fields, tags, indicators, delimiters and exporting records to the Library’s integrated system.
● Makes necessary changes in order to conform to library practices. Reviews new subject
headings accepted by the Library.
● Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for the operation of the Catalog Department.
Aids in problem solving with regard to the cataloging and authority subsystems of the Library
system. Solves problems in records and in the Library System.
● Directs operators regarding choice of records, modifications, call numbers, subject headings,
cataloging rules, and local practices.
● Coordinates, supervises, and participates in the maintenance of the database created by the
cataloging module of the library system.
● Attends meetings, participates in special projects, and serves on committees relating to the
library, the University, and consortia.

Additional Responsibilities
● Supervises, trains and evaluates student and library staff.
● Responsible for oversight of all aspects of record quality and catalog integrity .
● Creates original bibliographic and non-MARC metadata records following RDA, AACR2, Library of
Congress Classification Schedules and subject headings and other non-MARC metadata related
formats (e.g., Dublin Core). Collaborates with other areas of the Library to provide cataloging
and metadata technical support.
● Leads the development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical
metadata schemas for digital collections appropriate for the library’s current and future systems
and other content management systems.
● Works closely with other library departments in developing weeding project plans, generating
the reports and batch data processing that are necessary for collection weeding projects.
● Compiles and analyzes annual cataloging statistics for reporting to internal and external
agencies.
● Maintains knowledge of , and engages in , continuous professional development to keep up with
current and developing standards and practices for metadata and cataloging.
● Serves as primary liaison to OCLC.
Minimum Requirements
● Education – Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution
Preferred Education and Experience
● Two or more years of experience performing cataloging and metadata functions
● Advanced coursework in cataloging, indexing, and/or metadata.
● Supervisory experience
● Experience cataloging Spanish language materials.
Starting Salary: $52,800
