Job Description:
Reporting to the Head of Research and Instruction Services, the Science Librarian will be responsible for liaison duties, instruction, and collection development in all the sciences. The incumbent will work with the STEM Librarian and the Programming Librarian in delivering services to students and faculty in Agriculture, STEM, and other related fields.
Responsibilities Include:
- 60% Assists STEM Librarian and the Programming Librarian in providing library services to STEM and Agriculture disciplines. Provides instruction services for lower level science-related courses and provides library instruction for general library training sessions as needed.
- 20% Assists Programming Librarian in planning and executing Libraries events.
- 10% Develops discipline specific Web pages and other Internet-based materials, such as tutorials and subject, topic, and course guides.
- 5% Provides general and specialized research services through Chat and Ask Us web services.
- 5% Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited institution
1 or more years of experience in a library setting

Overview
Macalester College DeWitt Wallace Library seeks to hire a full-time Metadata Librarian. The Metadata Librarian creates, maintains, and enriches the metadata for Macalester’s digital, physical, and virtual collections. They serve in a critical role for making our collections discoverable and accessible using tools such as the ILS (currently WorldShare Management System) and digital asset management systems (currently Digital Commons and ContentDM). They work collaboratively with our Archivist to support sustainable print and digital archives collections and initiatives in line with our mission. The Metadata Librarian works closely with our Digital Initiatives & Scholarly Communication Librarian in support of metadata needs, instruction, and best practices for digital projects, publishing, and digital collection platforms and repositories. They bring and advocate for an inclusive, anti-racist, and anti-bias lens to the work of describing and creating access points to information resources, information platforms, algorithms, and systems. The Metadata Librarian serves as a member of the Collection Development and Discovery team and reports to the CD&D Associate Library Director.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a commitment to access, equity, diversity, and inclusion, including through remediation of institutional biases inherent in cataloging and metadata work.
- Holds primary responsibility for complex and original cataloging and classifies materials in all formats, following accepted national cataloging and metadata standards. Stays abreast of existing and evolving cataloging and metadata standards (e.g. RDA, MARC21 formats, AACR2r, LCSH, LCC, BIBFRAME, FRBR, Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, etc.) and shares this knowledge with library colleagues.
- Implements and supports metadata strategies associated with digital initiatives and projects: collaborates in the evaluation of existing workflows and processes, utilizes interoperable metadata standards, and applies creative strategies and sustainable solutions for resource description and discovery.
- Serves as a metadata consultant for digitization projects, including but not limited to advising on metadata standards and assisting in development and implementation of best practices, tools, procedures and workflows for metadata creation.
- Promotes and fosters partnerships with library colleagues involved in digital projects, special collections, continuing resources, and public services.
- Works with colleagues to strategically assess metadata quality; plans and coordinates metadata enhancement and remediation to address better discovery for library users; advises on data migration and harvesting projects; and advises on system migrations.
- Conducts and collaborates on library instruction related to the consideration and use of metadata.
- In collaboration with Library colleagues, maintains proper functioning of the ILS and other library systems and platforms, including discovery layers, and digital collections platforms.
- Attention to detail, high level of accuracy, and ability to perform work in a timely manner based on local and industry standards as well as library and community demands.
- Creates and maintains local documentation on metadata standards and application guidelines; develops and provides training to library staff regarding resource description, metadata remediation and metadata management.
- May assist with directing student employee workflow and training.
Qualifications
- Masters in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or from a program in a country with a formal accreditation process as identified by ALA.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply accepted national cataloging and metadata standards, practices, and original cataloging including experience cataloging materials through a utility, such as OCLC, in an integrated library system environment.
- Knowledge of best practices and trends in the profession and in areas of cataloging and metadata.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to deepen knowledge and practice of all aspects of this position over time.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Preferred
- 2+ years of applied cataloging and metadata experience.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Access & Learning Services Librarian is a highly motivated, collaborative, inclusive, and enthusiastic librarian who values an innovative student-centered approach to the development of information literacy skills and embraces the University’s commitment to community engagement. This position is a member of the KLC staff and is accountable to the Director of the Keleher Learning Commons. The Access & Learning Services Librarian is responsible for assisting users in making effective use of information resources and taking a leadership role in leveraging new technologies to meet the needs of student learners. This position provides outreach and instruction for the library MakerSpace and manages the KLC social media presence. This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, and administration of circulation and resource sharing services including interlibrary loan and document delivery, course reserves, and shelving of library materials. The position also contributes to undergraduate information and digital literacy initiatives in face-to-face and virtual environments. Under the guidance of the Director of the Keleher Learning Commons, this position provides direct customer service for USM students, faculty, and staff and hires, trains, and coordinates work-study positions in the Keleher Learning Commons. This person will have an outward-facing role in promoting the Keleher Learning Commons and will work to maintain a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
This full-time position, based on the Leavenworth campus, works from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. M-F. Hours may include some evening and weekend hours when required for the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Access Services
- Explores, develops, promotes, and assesses innovative technology tools and related services for library learners and identifies learning and engagement opportunities to support student research and promote student success.
- Collaborates with library colleagues to provide point of need reference services, course-integrated library instruction, library workshops, and a variety of outreach activities.
- Manages the library MakerSpace and Active Learning collections, including equipment and supply maintenance, outreach, and instruction.
- Leads the hiring, training, and supervision of student assistants in the library and coordinates with Research Services Assistants for daily supervision responsibilities of student assistants.
- Oversees Access Services functions such as, but not limited to, opening and closing the library, circulation processes, shelving, fines and billing, interlibrary loan, and reserves.
- Oversees circulating collection’s maintenance, including copy cataloging of purchased or donated materials, weeding, and general collection maintenance.
- Participates in library staff meetings and regional access services and emerging technology related meetings and communicates relevant information to supervisor.
- Confers regularly with supervisor reviewing, suggesting, and developing new activities, policies, procedures, and services consistent with the library’s mission.
- Coordinates KLC space reservations, scheduling and maintaining a calendar of events including setup and tear-down of events.
- Serves as the professional staff member to open the Keleher Learning Commons Monday-Friday and work with students, faculty, staff, and community members needing assistance at the Keleher Learning Commons Help Desk.
Learning Services
- Creates course materials and curriculum content (print and digital) supporting the instruction program, including the creation and enhancement of online learning objects such as specialized research guides and multimedia tutorials.
- Collaborates with faculty to deliver information literacy instruction face-to-face and online, both synchronously and asynchronously.
- Develops and coordinates activities to promote and publicize KLC services.
- Manages the library’s social media in collaboration with library staff under the supervision of the Library Director.
- Hires, trains, coordinates, and evaluates KLC Peer Tutors.
Other Duties
- Serves as primary contact for supplies, maintenance, printing, and other services for the Keleher Learning Commons.
- Serves on university and consortium committees as representative of the library.
- Participates in local, regional, or national library communities.
- Actively participates in the continuous improvement of services and resources utilizing evidence-based decision-making.

REQUIREMENTS:

El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana Collection Archival Fellow, Newfields

Overview
El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana is an artwork created to spark conversations about violence against women. It was presented in multiple venues across the state between October 2019 and October 2020, including at the Indiana General Assembly. Reporting to the Head of Libraries & Archives, the Archival Fellow will arrange and describe, analog and born-digital records from the installations and documentation of Mónica Mayer’s El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana, sponsored by Women 4 Change, Indiana.
In addition to the archival processing, digitization, and web archiving, the Archival Fellow will research and create a framework of best practices or recommendations for Newfields to acquire, manage, and preserve this and other multimedia artworks. The fellow will participate in outreach and advocacy work during the course of the fellowship, such as facilitating stakeholder visits, explaining the work while in process, and presenting the completed project and its findings to a group of staff members, donors, and other interested parties.
Temporary (6 months; Full-time (37.5hrs/week); $24/hour.
Primary Responsibilities
- Arranges and describes a collection of multi-media analog and born-digital materials, ca. 1 cubic foot and 190 GB, respectively, created as part of or documenting the El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana installations.
- Applies appropriate preservation/rehousing measures for analog materials in the collection.
- Leverages open-source digital preservation tools to stabilize and describe born-digital materials, managing the SIP, AIP, and DIP iterations.
- Develops DACS-compliant EAD-encoded XML finding aid in AtoM system.
- Creates digital surrogates and associated original metadata for selected analog collection materials, ca. 2,000 cards, in compliance with industry standards and institutional practice.
- Ingests digital surrogates and associated metadata into Piction and performs quality assurance.
- Appraises, captures, and describes relevant web resources with Conifer web recording tool.
- Researches and gathers best practices and recommendations for institution to acquire, manage, and preserve multi-media art objects across relevant departments, e.g. curatorial, registration, library and archives.

Required Skills
- Ability to apply archival theory and methodology including: appraisal, arrangement, description and basic preservation.
- Digital preservation theory and methodology foundational knowledge: familiarity with common conceptual models, processing frameworks, and the current tools/systems landscape.
- Awareness of standard web archiving approaches and tools.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with OpenRefine or similar tools.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel to enter, manage, review, and standardize metadata (using .xlsx and .csv files).
- Awareness of current trends in metadata standards and practice; experience with Dublin Core standard and controlled vocabularies, e.g. AAT, ULAN, LCSH strongly preferred.
- Functional knowledge of digital asset management and archival management systems, ability to follow guides/tutorials, and willingness to learn and troubleshoot in new systems.
- Foundational skill with imaging (digitization) and image processing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Bridge, used to manage or adjust (rotate, crop, review) digital images.
- Familiarity with contemporary art history and/or art museum work.

Education and/or Experience
