One of the cornerstones of the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning program is the speaker series. In this series, experts in teaching and learning share their work with instructors of all ranks at IU. It is like attending a handful of conference keynotes without the cost and travel a few times a year. The first talk titled Expanding Our Vision of Indiana University’s Research Mission, was by George Walker on September 24, 1999. Since then, more than 120 unique speakers have participated in the series.
While the series has evolved over the years, the purpose has remained the same; to raise awareness of scholarly teaching and spark curiosity in SoTL as a form of inquiry. Prior to the pandemic, these events were limited to the live session. Geographical constraints, room capacity, and teaching schedules dictated attendees. The move to the virtual environment over the last 18 months has allowed these events to become more accessible. No longer being restricted to the Bloomington campus and physical room capacity, more instructors can attend across the IU system. By utilizing Zoom Webinars, talks are easily recorded and captioned, enabling asynchronous streaming for those who could not attend live or who would like to rewatch a talk. Currently, you can access all five of the SoTL speakers from the 2020-2021 academic year as well as the first SoTL speaker of this academic year on the CITL Kaltura Channel.
These virtual keynotes have been captioned and added to a SoTL playlist for you. Please note, accessing the playlist will require IU log-in as does registration for the live event. The typical turnaround time from the live event to posting to the playlist is one week, so when possible it’s better to attend the live event. You can also register for the second keynote by Flower Darby, titled “Emotional Presence in Online Teaching for Increased Student Engagement, Persistence, and Success” on October 22.
