The Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) degree is the terminal degree in law designed for individuals interested in academia. It is a doctoral degree, following a professional training degree in law (LL.B. or J.D.) and the first graduate degree in law (LL.M.). Admission to the program is highly selective. The degree is generally equivalent to a Ph.D. degree and is academic-oriented, as it typically requires a combination of coursework, the production of a publishable dissertation, and a successful oral defense of the dissertation.
