The Graduate Musicology Association is a student-run organization within the Department of Musicology that functions as a small scholarly society. Each year, the GMA co-presents the Annual Symposium of Research in Music (with the Graduate Theory Association since 2021). The GMA organizes the annual Burkholder Lecture and departmental social events (Summer Concert, Fall Picnic, and Holiday Party) and is the first to welcome visiting/prospective/new students for whom GMA leadership is available to field any questions.
All musicology Ph.D. and M.A. students are automatically members of the GMA and membership is department exclusive. All GMA officers are elected by their peers to one-year terms and elections are held at the end of each Spring semester. Students are elected each year to represent the GMA to the Dean of the School of Music via the Student Representative Committee (SRC), and to the rest of the IU community via the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG).
No fees or dues are charged, but members are encouraged to show their support by participating in GMA events.
