Listen to a podcast about Michael’s project
The Music in Games Society (MGS) “is designed to create an interdisciplinary platform for students and faculty to express their interests for game sound and game design”. Founded and run by Michael Klinberg, a Masters student in Music Education, this on-campus IU group has exploded in popularity garnering over forty members since its start. As a result, Michael is facilitating the arranging and performance of several pieces rooted in video game music. Klinberg stated, “collected scores from 13 participating IU student arrangers and have poured through and prepped those” as they look to begin rehearsals following spring break. In order to pull this concert together, Klinberg is partnering with the audio engineering society, game development group, and student legal services. He is joined by his fellow officers, Alex Price, Brandi Quinn, Gabriel Prime, Ava Andrews, and Aaqil Abudullah, who will help to pull this concert vision together.
The MGS is looking forward to expanding their footprint on campus. They look forward to welcoming guest speakers to their weekly Thursday evening meetings and continuing to plan events throughout the school year. The goal for the organization is “to continuously cultivate a larger and more inclusive space for video game arts” and Klinberg is trying to do just that. Through a peer review process, he was accepted and went on to present at the Desert Skies Symposium at Arizona State University in February 2023 where he shared his philosophical inquiry and subsequent presentation titled Music in games society: incorporating informal and participatory cultures surrounding video game music in the collegiate setting to a room of music educators, students, and scholars garnering immense interest from the audience and praise.
While Klinberg and his MGS officers have all of their attention currently set on the upcoming concert, the hope is for IU musicians to continue working toward future performances in collaboration with the media school. Klinberg has a vision that includes immersive and diverse concert experiences. The MGS concert, which will take place on April 8th at 6:30 pm at the FAR center in Bloomington, consists of seven chamber ensembles performing the various arrangements and compositions from the cooperating composers.
