Hello! My name is Ceilidh Christie and I have recently completed my degree program at IUHS. I completed all of my high school courses and degree requirements through IUHS, so with 42 IUHS courses under my belt, I have learned a lot and hope some of the advice and experiences I am about to share will help current and prospective IUHS students as well as others navigating online learning right now.
In the movie Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Admiral Kirk teaches Starfleet cadets and students that, “We learn by doing.” One of the many reasons why I loved being at Indiana University High School’s online program was because I, myself had learned by doing.
IU’s Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (OVPUE) joins the Spring IUHS READS! Book Club. All current IU High School students and families, as well as all IU affiliated faculty and staff are invited to join us in reading The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore!
People often think that learning in an online school will be easier than learning in a traditional brick and mortar institution. It isn’t a matter of easiness, though. It is important that we realize that learning online and learning within a brick and mortar classroom are completely different experiences. One is not easier than the other; each space has its unique affordances and constraints, and understanding what you need is the key to knowing whether online learning is right for you.
IUHS students should be aware of a recent change in Examity. Examity will no longer support the use of any web browser except for Chrome and Firefox.
Please note that in general, IUHS already encourages all students to exclusively use Chrome and Firefox. No other browsers work well or consistently with Canvas. Likewise IUHS courses require the use of desktop or laptop computers. Chromebooks, tablets etc. will lead to frustration and regret.
First, I should say that this is not the type of book I normally read. I usually go for Science Fiction or Fantasy – I don’t usually look to Oprah for book advice…
I do enjoy high-quality writing, though, which isn’t guaranteed in ‘my kind’ of books. And Invention of Wings is very well written. There were plenty of sentences that were just so good that I stopped reading to let them sink in.
I didn’t realize the story was based on real people, so I was all set to criticize the book for the unrealistic aspect of these sisters becoming nationally famous. It seemed far fetched, but actually happened.
The story seems to accurately capture the points of view of not just the two main characters, a slave and a reluctant (to say the least) slave-owner, but also those of slavery supporters, wavering slave-owners, and various others. The writing brings the characters to life so thoroughly that you as a reader quickly begin caring about what is happening, and often dreading what’s coming up.
This is a well-told and fascinating novel, and very much worth your time to read – even if it isn’t your usual kind of book.
