Technical service departments are responsible for managing and organizing processes that ensure library collections are cataloged, classified, and accessible to users. Unlike other aspects of librarianship, technical service work is often invisible despite being paramount to the success of library users. At the OVGSTL 2025 Conference, we wish to shed light on unseen work and discuss the impact of technical services by examining best practices, resource management, emerging technology, and more.

Topics of interest included, but not limited to:

– DEI- Diversity and inclusion

– Keeping up with changes

– Staff recruiting and retention

– Department management

– Collaboration within and outside of the library

– Emerging library platforms

– Increasing costs and shrinking budgets

– Managing government documents

– Discovery and access

– AI in technical services

– Electronic resource management

– Metadata creation, reuse, and interoperability

– Workflow management, best practices, and documentation

The Conference Program Committee invites forward thinking submissions in all areas related to technical services librarianship including acquisitions, cataloging, serials, metadata, open access initiatives, electronic resources, and preservation in academic, public, and special libraries. Participants are encouraged to think about the importance of technical services work and its impact throughout libraries and communities alike.

The Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians (OVGTSL) was founded in 1924 and draws its membership from the states of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Moving house is never an easy task. Moving archives and collections, even less so! For the SIA Fall Workshop, we are focusing on moving archival collections and all the trials, tribulations, and occasional triumphs that come with this task. Please join us as we learn from three speakers as they share their stories, experiences, and lessons learned during the course of this Herculean task.

Following their presentations, we will come together in an Unconference to discuss a number of topics related to this subject. We will also be privileged to tour the Hamilton East Public Library’s new Crossroads Discovery Center! We are looking forward to learning and connecting with you!

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) seeks early and second-career librarians interested in advancing equitable and innovative futures for biomedical libraries within five years of graduation to participate in a one-year fellowship that fosters the development of librarians seeking to lead in medical or health sciences libraries. A cohort of between 4 and 5 Associate Fellows will be selected for the 2025-2026 year.

What will you do?

As a National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow, you will:

• Participate in projects on user services, collection, open science, artificial intelligence, health data standards, information discovery, scholarly communication, user engagement, archives, and training.
• Grow professionally and learn in a cohort, participating in a formal curriculum taught by staff experts
• Develop skills in data science (analysis, visualization)
• Develop foundations for leadership (presenting, network building)
• Receive support from experienced mentors
• Attend a professional conference and a one-week practicum at a health sciences library

The NLM Associate Fellowship Program (AFP) offers a series of staff-taught sessions in user services and collections, research, and development, intramural and extramural research, development, and the lifecycle of the NLM web-based products and services, and the NLM engagement and education program. Associate Fellows develop a national and international perspective of the NLM role in health science and biomedical science. Associate Fellows choose projects to collaborate on and complete with NLM staff allowing them to gain valuable project experience in areas that aid their future career. Associate Fellow projects have led to peer-review publications and to services that became a part of the services and products of NLM.

Appointment Length:

This is a one-year research appointment starting July 1, 2025, and ending June 30, 2026. The 2025 – 2026 Associate Fellowship Program year will be remote. Program hours will be 8:30 a.m.—5:00 p.m. Eastern time.

Qualification Requirements:

• Master’s degree in an ALA-accredited library/information science program, earned by June of the year of appointment or within 5 years. Undergraduate degrees can be in any major.
• United States citizenship.
• Desirable, but not essential:
  • Work experience in a library or health sciences environment.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in leadership.

Participant Benefits:

• Annual stipend of $68,405.00
• Health Insurance Supplement – The program offers a supplemental health insurance stipend for participants to purchase health insurance through a group health insurance plan via Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).  Alternatively, participants may choose to hold outside insurance. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
• Training and Travel Allowance that can be used for attendance at local and national conferences and other relevant training materials as determined by NLM and ORISE.

The Society of Indiana Archivists 2024 Fall Workshop will be held November 8, 2024, at the Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville, IN. SIA is happy to offer two scholarship to support attendance for the workshop: the Thomas Krasean Student Scholarship for students and new professionals, and the John Newman Professional Development Scholarship, which is open to all special collections and archives professionals in the state of Indiana. Both scholarships include complimentary registration for the annual meeting, as well as $150 to cover expenses associated with attending. The scholarships are described below. Please note that people do not have to be members of SIA to apply for and receive the scholarships or to attend the Workshop! The applications and attendance are open to everyone, and we encourage you to share this information widely with your colleagues and students!

Two scholarships will be awarded for the 2024 Fall Workshop. Both scholarships will receive a complimentary registration to the workshop and $150 to cover the expenses associated with attending. Thomas Krasean Student Scholarship

Graduate students enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program, Master of Arts (MA) in History or Museum Studies program, or a related graduate program, and new professionals (up to five years of post-graduate work experience) are encouraged to apply.

John Newman Professional Development Scholarship

Anyone in the field of special collections and archives in the state of Indiana is eligible to apply for this scholarship. New employees and volunteers are especially encouraged to apply as well as applicants with limited professional development opportunities available through their institution.

The application deadline is Friday, October 25, 2024 at midnight. The winner will be notified in writing by October 31, 2024.

To Apply: Send a statement of 200-300 words about why the workshop will help you gain knowledge and experience useful in your volunteering efforts or career, along with your name, institution you work/volunteer for, and contact information. Submit your statement to Sara Stefani (samastef@iu.edu). In the email subject line please state the scholarship that you are applying for.

The award recipient will be announced through the SIA listserv prior to the Fall Workshop. If the winner has already paid the workshop fee upon receipt of the scholarship, the fee paid will be refunded. Upon accepting the award, the recipient must submit a headshot along with a reflection of their experience at the Fall Workshop for publication in the next SIA News and Notes newsletter.
