The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) champions health sciences librarianship by building partnerships and promoting diversity across LIS and other graduate programs.

In NNLM Region 6 (serving Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin), we’re excited to connect with LIS and iSchool students, educators, and administrators about engagement opportunities.

We are offering a 12-week virtual practicum in Spring 2025, titled Mapping Health Equity to Empower Communities. This practicum focuses on social determinants of health, health literacy, health statistics resources, and mapping analytics software. Students use the knowledge and skills they acquire to develop content for the Community Guide to Advance Health Information Equity. They will have the opportunity to learn from seasoned librarians and information professionals working in the area of health information access in a variety of ways.

The Competent Humility Model: Merging the Powers of Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility

Abstract:

In today’s interconnected world, understanding and navigating diverse cultural landscapes is essential for effective communication, collaboration, and mutual respect. This presentation delves into the transformative concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility, illuminating their significance in fostering inclusive environments and bridging cultural divides.

This presentation, which introduces Dr. Cooke’s new Competent Humility Model, offers a holistic approach to building and maintaining cultural competence and cultural humility, and emphasizes how these processes work in tandem. Whether in the workplace, educational settings, or community engagements, embracing these concepts fosters a more inclusive and harmonious society where diversity is celebrated, and mutual understanding flourishes. Join us as we embark on a journey towards cultural activism and cultural humility, which enables us to create a more equitable profession and future.

Bio:

Dr. Nicole A. Cooke is the Augusta Baker Endowed Chair and a Professor at the School of Library and Information Science, at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Cooke’s research and teaching interests include human information behavior, fake news consumption and resistance, critical cultural information studies, LIS Education, and diversity and social justice in librarianship. Dr. Cooke was named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal in 2007, she was awarded the 2016 ALA Equality Award, and she was presented with the 2017 ALA Achievement in Library Diversity Research Award, presented by the Office for Diversity and Literacy Outreach Services. She has also been honored as the Illinois Library Association’s 2019 Intellectual Freedom Award winner in recognition of her work in combating online hate and bullying in LIS, and she was selected as the Association for Library and Information Science Education’s 2019 Excellence in Teaching award winner. In 2021 she was presented with the Martin Luther King, Jr., Social Justice Award by the University of South Carolina, in 2022 the Black Caucus of the American Library Association granted her their Advocate Award, and in 2024 the American Library Association presented her with the Lippincott Award.

Now the founding editor of ALA Neal-Schuman’s Critical Cultural Information Studies book series, Cooke has published numerous articles and book chapters. · Have a Master’s degree in Library Science.

What does the job look like?

• Provides in-depth research and recommendation of resources and materials to patrons such as recommending print or electronic sources or titles, placing material requests, searching shelves, and referring to other libraries or community sources. Assists patrons with special collections, resources and services found specifically at Central Library, if applicable.

• Makes appropriate recommendations and provides instruction and technical assistance to patrons in using online catalog, print and electronic sources to access information, and in using computers and other equipment, including general internet help and accessing library resources through computers and mobile devices. Assists with printing.

Evaluates materials for condition and usefulness and discards accordingly; recommends new materials; creates and organizes displays to promote library resources.

• Develops plans for services and programs for the community served; schedules, delivers, evaluates with feedback of participants. Implements programming including computer instruction.

• Initiates partnerships that lead to the development, implementation, and administration of system-wide community outreach programs and events.

• Promotes library use and services through displays, presentations, participation in community events, communications and publicity distribution.

• Assists patrons with performing online job searches, writing resumes and cover letters and locating online legal forms, tax documents, and government websites, for immigration, unemployment and SNAP.

• Assists in collection and analysis of data on library use, services, trends and community resources.

Public Services Librarian (FT/Adult)
• Informs patrons of library policies and procedures, observes patron activity, and addresses violations of the library behavior policy. • Stays current on print and electronic resources offered by the library and popular computer applications. • Processes circulation and/or collection reports. • Creates lists, provides reader’s advisory and posts comments in Bibliocommons. • Upon request, completes interlibrary loan functions. • Provides social services resources and referrals to patrons in need (homeless, mentally ill, etc.) • Provides a variety of clerical and/or technical tasks in support of assigned function, including checking in and out material in a timely manner, processing holds and reserves, assisting patrons with library card applications and accepting payment for library fines and services. • Provides training and guidance to staff on appropriate resources and their use, as needed. • Other job duties and responsibilities as assigned. The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Mentorship Program is now open for applications.

Main goals

• To encourage and guide Chinese or Chinese American or Chinese Canadian LIS students with career planning
• To help new Chinese American and Chinese Canadian librarians to develop their professional careers
• To recruit and provide a pool of experienced Chinese American and Chinese Canadian librarians as potential mentors
• To promote diversity in the profession and highlights the experiences and value of librarians of Chinese heritage

Requirements

• A valid CALA membership is required for all participants. More information can be found at http://cala-web.org/membership.
• Mentors must have a minimum of five-years of professional experience. Mentors may participate in multiple years and are welcome to reapply every year.
• Mentees may be students or early-career LIS professionals with less than five years of experience.

About the Program 

The CALA Mentorship Committee recruits applicants from CALA membership and matches mentoring pairs based on participant goals and geographical location.

The program runs from October 14th, 2024 to May 31st, 2025. Participants may continue the arrangement independently after the program year ends.

Participants are expected to communicate regularly with their mentor/mentee throughout the program. Participants are recommended to communicate once a month.

The Committee will check in with participants multiple times during the year. At any time during the program year, participants may contact the Mentorship Committee for assistance.
