In keeping with the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), the Society of American Archivists (SAA), and other leading institutions and authorities, University Collections at Indiana University selectively deaccessions some materials to achieve a greater refinement of the collection and better match its collecting mission. University Collections seeks to maintain material that holds value in significant measure, whether it be the informational usefulness, historical significance, monetary worth, or significance to the mission of IU. However, when an item no longer serves a useful purpose for IU or its collections, University Collections may consider deaccession. University Collections seeks a graduate student to assist with deaccession concerns in the Institute for American Thought (IAT) on the IUPUI campus.
The position assists in the operation of a small library of philosophical materials in the following areas:
- Deaccessioning (removing duplicates) and inventorying materials, in consultation with designated faculty
- Cataloging (copy) and technical processing of both physical and digital library materials (English language)
- Reshelving items and library stack maintenance
- Modifying database records as necessary
- Responsible for all aspects of print serials control, including inputting holdings into spreadsheets and /or appropriate library software
- Using appropriate library, campus, and general office systems in performance of duties
- Attending relevant meetings, workshops, and training sessions on and off campus
- Participating in the development of policies and procedures
- General office duties, including equipment demonstration, monitoring, and troubleshooting
- Special projects and other tasks as assigned
Candidates should have the ability to:
- Carry out job functions with flexibility, independent judgement, and initiative
- Comfortably work with technology, including software configuration and the use of standard office productivity software, vendor tools, and online bibliographic selection tools
- Contribute to a positive working environment and a willingness to help others accomplish their objectives
- Handle all responsibilities with a high level of courtesy and tact
Students in these positions may work up to 20 hours/week. $15/hour. Positions do not include benefits.
