West Lafayette History and Public Services Librarian
Join our Library team as we dive into our community’s history and work every day to provide excellent library service to the residents of our community.
The successful applicant will be:
Responsible for collecting and working with West Lafayette related materials, expanding West Lafayette Public Library’s local/public history collection – approximately 40% of each work week
This work includes:
- seeking and accepting donations of written and digitized materials, classifying, cataloging and digitizing the existing and newly donated collections,
- developing public programing in written and digital formats which highlight West Lafayette History for residents of all ages and
- ensuring the collections include the experiences of both majority and minority histories in West Lafayette
Participating in continuing education including expanding collaborative work with Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Purdue University Archives, other local libraries, and participating in continuing education workshops and webinars – approximately 10% of each workweek
Seeking grants and donations to support and extend the work of the Center, working with other library staff and community organizations – approximately 10% of each workweek
Responsible for providing Library Services to the public
- Working with library colleagues to provide excellent public library service to the Library’s patrons at public service desks and, occasionally, outside the Library building.
- The public desk schedule may vary, but will include day, evening and/or weekend hours (including occasional Sundays). Weekend shifts are not mandatory overtime; weekends are part of the 40-hour workweek. – approximately 30% of each work week
Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION:
College diploma required; Masters in Library Science, college degree in History or Museum Studies encouraged
Previous experience in a public service and/or public history environment is encouraged
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to continually learn more about local history, archiving and library science from professionals in these fields; achieve and maintain Indiana Librarian Certification level 4 within three years of employment*
- Proven high-quality customer service experience
- Excellent communication skills, phone etiquette; fluency in English
- Able to work during school/college calendar breaks
- Ability to work with a diverse patron population
- Ability to work independently and as a team with other Library staff
- Proficiency in and the ability to assist patrons in the use of computers, tablets, mobile devices, apps, and applications; experience with Google Apps (G-Suite) and Microsoft Office
- Detail-oriented
- Project management and strong problem-solving skills
- Physical labor: lifting boxes of books, pushing book carts, bending & stooping, ability to lift and carry at least 25 pounds
Familiarity with the West Lafayette community/Indiana a plus
HOURS and COMPENSATION:
Full Time (40 hours per week), exempt position
Compensation: $40,000 minimum annual salary
