University of Louisville (UofL) Libraries invites applications from creative, collaborative, and intellectually curious candidates for the position of Engineering & Data Librarian. This tenure-track position works with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in UofL’s Speed School of Engineering and represents an exciting opportunity to build partnerships and programs supporting data and digital scholarship needs on campus. The position reports to the Head of the Research Assistance and Instruction (RAI), a collegial and supportive department of seven librarians and two professional staff. Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply but must graduate with an ALA-accredited degree by the end of Spring semester, 2021.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide information literacy, research, and data support primarily for academic programs in the Speed School of Engineering, with additional support for other STEM programs as needed
- Create tutorials, videos, guides, and other online tools to meet the needs of STEM students and faculty working in remote and hybrid learning environments
- Develop a thorough understanding of the contemporary research lifecycle, including innovations in data management and digital scholarship; cultivate a relevant skill set to assist students and faculty in these areas
- Build campus partnerships and programs to support data and digital scholarship needs in STEM fields
- Consult with librarians and researchers across campus on data-related issues
- Serve as library liaison to the Speed School of Engineering, forming strong relationships with students and faculty through regular communication and collaboration
- Participate actively in collection development to support academic programs in engineering and other STEM fields
- Serve on the libraries-wide Scholarly Communication and Data Management Group, assisting with promotion of the ThinkIR institutional repository and the development of other digital scholarship initiatives
- Provide citation management training and general research assistance, and participate in other departmental activities, as a member of the Research Assistance and Instruction Department
- Engage in scholarly activities (publications, presentations, etc.) and professional service as a faculty member in University Libraries
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or international equivalent in library or information science
- Degree in a relevant discipline, or experience providing library services or research assistance in relevant disciplines
- Interest in professional development in data management, digital scholarship, and related areas
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication
- Innovative and creative mindset
- Flexibility and openness to change
- Enthusiasm for online and face-to-face teaching, research, and public service
- Proven ability to initiate, balance, and follow through on multiple projects
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
- Proven ability to work successfully with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and community members
- Potential for satisfying the University Libraries faculty promotion and tenure requirements
Desirable Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant STEM discipline
- Experience in academic libraries
- Experience providing reference or research assistance
- Experience with teaching, especially in online or hybrid learning environments
- Familiarity with current trends in STEM research and education
- Familiarity with data management practices, key data sources, and digital scholarship trends
The anticipated initial rank is Instructor or Assistant Professor. Entry rank and salary are negotiated at the time of offer and are dependent on the experience, professional achievement and assigned rank of the successful candidate.
