The IUSB Botany Club is going apple picking, and you are invited to join the fun! Meet at Lehman’s Orchard (2280 Portage Rd, Niles, MI) at noon on Sunday, September 26th. We’ll meet at noon to review what fruits are available for picking and go from there. The orchard operates on a U-Pick system (http://www.lehmansorchard.com/) – bring your own carrier bag. This is a working orchard, so bees or wasps could be present. No entry fee required, but any fruit picked will need to be paid for to take home. Event is limited to 49 people. Please contact Andrew Schnabel with questions (aschnabe@iusb.edu).

Activities will include an educational talk on ecosystems, removing invasive species from the park, and taking a nature hike. Lunch will be provided. Information on the staff volunteer paid leave policy can be found here: https://hr.iu.edu/relations/volunteer-leave.html. Staff will be paid for the day, pending their supervisors’ approval.

WHEN: 24 September, 12pm to 1pm

Meet with other faculty to discuss our experiences, what we’ve overcome, and remaining challenges to accomplishing our scholarship in the evolving pandemic environment. Potential subjects to discuss include access to specialized materials and/or equipment, management of student employees and mentees, collaborative work on-campus or beyond, travel constraints, publication and meetings issues, et cetera. How can the faculty of Indiana University South Bend learn together from the last year and respond in ways that help?
This event is sponsored by the IUSB Center for Excellence in Research and Scholarship (CERES). Contact director Josh Wells (jowells@iusb.edu) with questions.
Deans’ Seminar – Mike Scheessele – 9/17/21 (zoom and in person)
The first Deans’ Seminar in the 2021-22 series will be held this Friday, September 17, 2021. Mike Scheessele, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Psychology, will present his research entitled “The Hard Limit on Human Nonanthropocentrism.” We will meet at noon in the UCET Classroom (NS245). Feel free to bring your lunch. Soft drinks and water will be provided.
If you are more comfortable joining via zoom the link is https://iu.zoom.us/j/93176192536
Abstract:
There may be a limit on our capacity to suppress anthropocentric tendencies toward non-human others. Normally, we do not reach this limit in our dealings with animals, the environment, etc. Thus, continued striving to overcome anthropocentrism when confronted with these non-human others may be justified. Achievement of super artificial intelligence (super AI), however, may force us to face this limit, denying us the ability to free ourselves completely of anthropocentrism. Given concerns that super AI could pose an existential threat to humanity, this might be for our own good.
