All IU campuses now have access to the 3rd edition ebook of Classroom Assessment Techniques: Formative Feedback Tools for College and University Teachers. This book describes over 50 techniques to help instructors quickly gauge student learning, indexed by teaching goal, cognitive goal, or discipline. One popular technique is the Background Knowledge Probe (p. 125-129), used to determine students’ prior knowledge. Each technique includes step-by-step procedures, examples, caveats, references, and resources.
The 2nd edition ebook of Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty focuses on techniques for pairs and small groups. It describes 35 activities supported by research and learning theories, including methods for large, flipped, and online classes. One popular method is Think-Pair-Share (p. 153-158), where students reflect on a question, discuss with a partner, and share with the class. This technique ensures broad participation and helps instructors hear from more students. Each technique includes the purpose, preparation, procedures, variations, advice, and primary resources.
We will share techniques from these books throughout the semester. You are welcome to request a consultation to discuss any aspect of your teaching, including ways to engage your students and gauge their learning.
