A new Canvas feature makes it easier than ever to create inclusive learning spaces: The recently-enabled personal pronouns allows Canvas users to select their preferred pronouns. Much like correctly pronouncing a person’s name, using preferred pronouns demonstrates you respect and value a person’s identity.
Sharing your own pronouns is a great way to create an inclusive environment and signals your allyship. Additionally, it sets the tone that you’re intentional about your learning environment and establishes a standard for the group, including those who may be new to learning about gender pronouns. Adding your pronouns to your name/profile normalizes the act and makes it less uncomfortable and awkward for those wanting to share their pronouns with you.
It can be incredibly scary and vulnerable for a student to share their pronouns if that pronoun doesn’t conform to what the culture may traditionally prescribe to them.
To add pronouns to your profile in Canvas, navigate to Profile Settings, click “Edit Settings,” select your preferences via the dropdown menu. For illustrated directions, see the following guide. (Note: The title of the guide indicates how to set the pronouns as a student, but the directions work for all Canvas users).
You can also ask your students their preferred name and pronouns via Canvas survey. Click here to learn more about the value of beginning-of-term surveys and potential questions.
