Ceramic Tile Coasters…
I thought I would try making a wedding present of ceramic tile coasters that were colored. I am trying the “sharpie” method (etch it, color with sharpie, use rubbing alcohol to remove excess). The only flaw with this method it you cant avoid the part you want colored, so you remove some of that color (looks a little faded)
I lasered (Glowforge) at 1000 speed and full power.
Then I did 800 & full power. Not sure if it really got deeper.
I also tried acrylic paint, but all of it scraped off
I am trying to let the sharpie dry longer with this next batch.
The final one of the last batch I decided to mask and slow speed down to 700 because of masking. And that burned the ceramic a little bit. So back up to 800.
Which also left the ceramic darker. I wonder if it is because I am using blue tape…though the darker colors are closer to team colors.
The biggest problem is getting rid of excess color without impacting color you want.
What else would you color with in a school setting?
I am going to use some modge podge to “seal” these
I have read about a couple of other methods. One is simply masking and using spray paint. The other is using a mixture of titanium dioxide and rubbing alcohol and spraying a couple of layers on the tile before lasering. The TiO2 turns black (bit not colors). Then rinse off any excess.
I might try modge podging a printed graphic onto a tile.
