The Peter Burkholder Lecture Fund supports visiting lecturers in the Department of Musicology at the IU Jacobs School of Music. The scholarship was established in 2019 in honor of Distinguished Professor Dr. J. Peter Burkholder, and in celebration of his retirement.
Dr. Burkholder attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, then the University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D. in Musicology in 1983. He began teaching at Indiana University in 1988 after holding a teaching position at the University of Wisconsin.
His research interests include 20th century music, Charles Ives, musical borrowing, American music, musical meaning, analysis, and music history pedagogy. Along with his contribution to writing A History of Western Music, used as the resource for study of Western music across universities, he has authored Charles Ives: The Ideas Behind the Music and All Made of Tunes: Charles Ives and the Uses of Musical Borrowing.
Burkholder was named an honorary member of the American Musicological Society in 2010, and was the youngest person to receive the award. He has served as president, vice president, and director-at-large of the AMS, as a board member of the College Music Society, and as president of the Charles Ives Society.
