Nicholas Cline’s (MM ‘13) Recent Performances and Recordings In November, The Crossing and saxophonist Matthew Levy (Prism Quartet) premiered the revised version of his work, Watersheds for 24 voices, tenor saxophone, and live electronics. The work was recorded for a commercial release scheduled for fall 2022. The concert was previewed here in the New York Times. Nicholas also had performances of his work, she took his hands, by the Drexel University Chamber Singers and the Earlham College Chamber Singers. |

Album Debut for Remote Collaboration grein, Featuring Aaron Michael Smith (BM 10’) grein is a collaborative project between Aaron Michael Smith & Jay Rauch, multi-instrumentalists collaborating over a distance, living in Boston and Seattle respectively. Their work explores geological structures of time that form and coalesce through iterative improvisation. grein is releasing their debut album TAXIC GNOSIS through LA-based tape label Dinzu Artefacts on December 3, 2021. Physical cassette tapes can be ordered through the Dinzu Artefacts website and digital downloads can be found on grein’s Bandcamp as well as via your preferred streaming service. |

Yi-De Chen’s Works Featured in CNMF 2021 and NYCEMF 2021 Yi-De Chen’s “Diffusion” for String Quartet (2021), commissioned by the Beo String Quartet, was featured in the Charlotte New Music Festival’s online concert in July 2021. In residence at the festival this year, the brilliant Beo String Quartet started working on this piece two months before the concert, making the performance impressive. Chen was glad to meet many talented, supportive composers, performers, and mentors at this unforgettable conference. Also, Chen’s “The Changeable Weather” for live electronics (2020) was featured in the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival 2021. This interactive electronic music work for nanoKONTROL2, Max, and Kyma was video-documented by Chen in November 2020. This video documentation is a live performance that shows his operating the nanoKONTROL2 in Taiwan, with the sound produced in Jacobs School’s CECM Studio in real-time, using the UDP network transmission infrastructure. He appreciates all the support he received from his mentors at Jacobs. |

Alex Tedrow Recent Performances/Commission Alex Tedrow premiered his score for the documentary, The Addict’s Wake, at the Heartland International Film Festival on October 11. Recently selected for the Indiana Spotlight Award, The Addict’s Wake is a feature-length film that follows stories of heroin addiction and recovery in Brown County, Indiana, serving as a microcosm for opioid addiction struggles in rural communities across the Midwest. In addition, Tedrow’s song cycle, A Few Figs from Thistles was performed by Caroline Goodwin and Mya King on October 29 at the Faculty and Friends Recital during the ISU Contemporary Music Festival. On November 20, Tedrow’s Biff for baritone saxophone and 8-channel electronics was performed by Jake Simons at the Jacksonville Electronic Music Festival (jemFEST). Finally, Alex was recently commissioned to write a new piece for middle school band and electronics for the Young Winds program through the IU Music Education Department, which will be premiered next spring. |

Prof. Larry Groupé Begins Scoring New Movie with Director Rod Lurie Larry Groupé with director Rod Lurie and star Michael Chiklas on the set of the new movie “The Senior”. A real-life story of an athlete who was expelled from college only to return years later at age 59 to re-enroll and complete his senior year. He then tries out for the football team and actually gets on! A great story of redemption. Larry spent several days on set to glean the drama of the performances and hear specific direction from Rod Lurie to the actors, all of which will now influence the new score he is writing. |
