- Center for Electronic and Computer Music
- Established in 1966 for the purpose of theoretical training, electronic and multi-media composition, and the dissemination of works through public concerts, the Center for Electronic and ComputerMusic today houses two studios which employ the latest technologies in digital sound synthesis and sampling, MIDI, digital recording and editing, video, and research-level computing. The curriculum provides an extensive technical training and historical background for students with little or no previous experience. More advanced students may enroll to use the studio facilities for the production of compositions and multi-media works, as well as for research. The program may serve as a graduate minor for DM or MM degrees or an Outside Area for the MM. The center presents a recital at the end of every semester.
- IRCAM Summer Program for IU Composers
- IU is once again co-sponsoring a summer electronic music composition program in Paris, France. Students spend the month of June at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) where they will be trained in sound synthesis, patching, sound sculpting, and IRCAM’s composition software. They will also benefit from the IRCAM ManiFeste Music Festival, which will be incorporated in the program’s activities.
- Funding related to international activities can be explored through these web resources:
- Please check with the CECM director for additional information about the program.
- New Music Ensemble
- This student ensemble operates under the aegis of the Composition Department and presents the music of recent decades in four concerts each year on the Bloomington campus. Recent tours have taken them to Mexico City, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angles, and to other college campuses in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. Composition majors who are also strong performers frequently join this ensemble. Auditions are usually held on the first day of fall semester for piano and strings. Percussion and winds are assigned by the performance faculty through the regular orchestra auditions.
- Visiting Student Status
- The Visiting Student (VS) enrollment option is available to students who wish to do advanced study without pursuing a degree or diploma. Visiting Student status requires an interview and documents in accordance with the graduate requirements for composition as well as permission from a faculty member for instruction.
