Matthew Peterson’s (MM ’08) Voir Dire recording releases worldwide to critical-acclaim
On October 9, 2020 the original-cast recording of Voir Dire, a true-crime courtroom opera by Matthew Peterson with libretto by Jason Zencka was released worldwide on the new Indie-classical label RedHouse. The label celebrated its first release with a party in Stockholm featuring performances from Voir Dire by soprano Elisabeth Mayer and bass John Sax. Writing for Dagens Nyheter, Martin Nyström awarded the recording the top rating, and Svenska-Dagbladet arts editor Anders Q. Björkman wrote that Voir Dire is his “favorite [work] in the true-crime genre.” The Wall Street Journal called Voir Dire “startlingly immediate and journalistic, as gripping as a great feature story, and made memorable by the depth and texture of the music.” Featuring breathtaking performances by five young opera artists – Anna Laurenzo, Trevor Martin, Nate Mattingly, Christina Pecce and Andrew Surrena – and an ensemble of nine Minnesota musicians conducted by maverick opera-maestro Viswa Subbaraman, the 90-minute opera was recorded over two intense days in June 2018 at Minnesota Public Radio’s Weyerhauser Studio in St Paul, MN. The recording was funded by over 100 crowdfunding-supporters as well as a grant from the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet). Voir Dire can be streamed on all digital services including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, and the double-CD set can be purchased from ALOADED. |
