Jihun Kim Finalist in Chanticleer’s Student Composer Competition
Jihyun’s choir piece Lullaby for sleepless nights was selected as a finalist for Chanticleer’s Student Composer Competition. The Chanticleer LAB choir will perform the piece in San Francisco during November.
Grant Luhmann Completes Wind Ensemble Commission
Grant Luhmann has just completed a commission for the Whitefish Bay Wind Band Consortium. The consortium, organized by director Nicholas Castonguay, consists of eleven bands based in Wisconsin and Minnesota including university, community, and high school ensembles. Each ensemble in the consortium will perform the piece at least once throughout the 2014-15 academic year before the work becomes available for general performance.
Texu Kim Wins The 2014 American Prize, Awarded Residency with Ensemble 212
Texu has been selected as the winner of The American Prize in Composition 2014 in the student orchestral division, for his Monastic Sceneries. Additionally, Texu has been appointed as the 2014-15 Composer-in-Residence of Ensemble 212 in New York City. As a part of his residency, he will get three of his pieces performed by the orchestra.
Nicholas Landrum Appointed Composition Fellow of the MusicaNova Orchestra
Nicholas Landrum has been appointed the inaugural composition fellow of the MusicaNova Orchestra in Phoenix Arizona. His work Gaslight will be premiered by the ensemble on October 26th.
Ian Clarke Receives Performances Domestically and Abroad
Ian Clarke recently had the honor of having two of his electroacoustic pieces accepted to domestic and international festivals. He performed his work Figurehead, for 8-channel fixed media, live electronics, and militant speaker at the ICMC-SMC computer music conference, which was held in Athens, Greece, from September 14 – 20. Additionally, his video and electronics piece The Laws of Nature will be performed at Lewis College in Illinois for the Electronic Music Midwest Festival, which will be held from October 16 – 18.
The Music of Kenji Kuriyama to be Featured at the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Conference
Kenji Kuriyama’s Redemption for flute, cello, and piano will be performed at the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers Conference held at Biola University in California. The conference will take place October 9 – 11 and Ensemble Christo L.A. will perform the piece.

Melody Eötvös (DM ’14) awarded Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Commission
Melody Eötvös (DM ’14) has been selected by the League of American Orchestras and Earshot for an orchestral commission supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
The Toulmin commission is a part of a new program to provide commissions and premieres for scores composed by women. Eötvös was selected from among six composers who took part in EarShot’s series of rehearsals, career development workshops and mentoring sessions with orchestras around the country.
Ara Cho (MM ’13) Wins 4th Ilshin Composition Prize
Ara Cho (MM ’13) has won the 4th Ilshin Composition Prize, which included the premiere of a new composition at the Seoul Spring Festival. With an additional prize of ten thousand dollars, her piece The Star was performed by Ensemble TIMF for Seoul Spring Festival in Korea.
Caroline KyungA Min Ahn’s (DM 2011) Recent Appointment
Caroline KyungA Min Ahn (DM ’11) has been appointed as a full-time Adjunct Professor at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Joshua Groffman (DM ’12) Takes Appointments with Sarah Lawrence College and Ars Musica Chorale
Alumnus Joshua Groffman (DM ’12) has been appointed as Guest Faculty of Music Theory and Composition at Sarah Lawrence College. The new position will include aural skills, as well as a sabbatical replacement teaching private composition and introductory through advanced computer music. Joshua has also been appointed 2014-2015 Composer-in-Residence with Ars Musica Chorale; the season will include three world premieres of works commissioned by the choir. He will also write a new work for soprano Lucy Dhegrae.
