Grace Ann Lee (BM ’19) and Seare Farhat (MM ’22) to Participate in Copland House CULTIVATE Copland House announced the six Fellows chosen to participate in its CULTIVATE 2023 emerging composers institute, including IU composition alumni Grace Ann Lee and Seare Farhat. Copland House commissions each of the Fellows to create a new composition that serves as the focus of an intensive week of collective and individual daily rehearsals and workshops with Derek Bermel and artists from Music from Copland House. |

Leigha Amick (BM ’21) Presents Works with Boulder Philharmonic and Aspen Music Festival On April 22nd, the Boulder Philharmonic will premiere Leigha Amick’s new orchestral work Gossamer Depths, commissioned as part of their inaugural “Resound Boulder” commissioning competition. In May, students from the Curtis Institute of Music will premiere Leigha’s string quartet written for choreographer Matthew Neenan at the Rock Dance School Gala. This summer, Leigha will attend the Aspen Music Festival as a composition fellow and will present a song cycle, an orchestral work, and a piece for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. |

Patricia Wallinga (BM ’17) Reimagines Mendelssohn Hensel Sonata for Orchestra Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s Piano Sonata in G Minor (1843), one of her late masterworks, is an imaginative and virtuosic piece, written with a clear orchestral sensibility despite being a solo work. Patricia Wallinga (B.M. Music Composition, ’17) has reimagined the work for chamber orchestra and piano, giving virtuosic pianist-composer Mendelssohn Hensel a concerto in the classical canon for the first time. The premiere is scheduled for June 15, 2023 with soloist Sharon Su and the Ballets Russes Arts Initiative, with more performances across the U.S. to follow. Seare Farhat (MM ’22) Receives Charles Ives Scholarship from American Academy of Arts and Letters The American Academy of Arts and Letters announced its 2023 Music Award Winners, among them Seare Farhat, who was one of six composers to receive the $7,500 Charles Ives Scholarship. |

Caroline Goodwin Releases Debut EP of Tedrow’s A Few Figs from Thistles Soprano, Caroline Goodwin, released her debut EP recording of Alex Tedrow’s (MM) song cycle, A Few Figs from Thistles in March. The album was created collaboratively with the help of Mya King (piano), Ben Wesenberg (audio), and Austin Jones (artwork). The EP is available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube Music. |

Kian Ravaei April Performances This April, Kian Ravaei’s string quartet Family Photos will be performed by the Cuatro Puntos Ensemble at their three Sounds of Persia concerts in Connecticut. Additionally, Achrome Ensemble will give the European premiere of Ravaei’s work Unstoppable in Bergamo, Italy. |
