Jeremy Podgursky Receives Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters
Jeremy Podgursky was one of six students to receive Ives Scholarships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The award of $7500 is given to composition students of great promise. Jeremy will attend the awards ceremony at the Academy in May to receive his award.

Performances in Baltimore and NYC
Podgursky’s As a Spell, Against Falling Objects (or How I Learned to Love Gravity), premiered by the IU New Music Ensemble as part of the 2012 Dean’s Prize, was performed in Baltimore on March 12th by the newly formed Peabody Modern Orchestra (Harlan Parker, conductor).
On February 22nd, the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble (Astoria Chamber Music Society), premiered Jeremy’s Trance Mechanics at the Tenri Cultural Institute. The piece was made possible by a grant awarded to Jeremy by the Fromm Music Foundation, Harvard University.
Ezra Donner to Release Album
Ezra Donner will release new recording of Mountain Suite, recorded earlier in March with the Budapest Chamber Orchestra. The release will be available on CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify, on April 22 (Earth Day).

Kevin Hartnett Receives Performance
Kevin Hartnett’s string orchestra piece American Sojourn was recently performed by the Columbia Civic Orchestra in Columbia, MO. The ensemble, led by music director Stefan Freund, programmed the piece as part of its “Missouri Composers Orchestra Project” concert.

Benjamin Taylor Travels as Guest Composer
Benjamin Taylor (DM) spent almost a week traveling with the Brigham Young University – Idaho Symphony Band during their tour of Idaho, Utah, and Nevada featuring six performances of his commissioned band transcription of Leaving White. The tour culminated in a performance of the same work at CBDNA in Reno on March 13, 2014. Another of his commissioned works for saxophone quartet titled Digital Goldfish was premiered by Solaire Quartet at the University of Indianapolis on February 24, 2014.
Sang Mi Ahn named a finalist in the Maurice Gardner Competition
Sang Mi Ahn’s Dirge for the Earth Elements was selected as a finalist in the Third Biennial Maurice Gardner Composition Competition held by the American Viola Society. The piece was written in collaboration with violist Tze-Ying Wu at Indiana University.
In addition, Ahn’s Convergence (winning work of the 2013 Heckscher Composition Prize) is going to be performed by saxophonist Steven Mauk at the Americas Society in New York City on April 14.
Update from Samuel Wells
Samuel Wells was the guest artist and composer of the 2014 Montana State University Brass Weekend, where the MSU Wind Symphony gave the premier performance of Castle Rock for band and electronics. Sam has also had performances at the 2014 National Student Electronic Music Event and the 2014 SEAMUS National Conference.
In April, Sam will be guest artist and composer at the University of Western Ontario and Western Michigan University, where he will discuss his music and present recitals of new music for trumpet and electronics.
In June, Sam will perform his work, (dys)functions, at the New York City Electronicacoustic Music Festival.
Corey Rubin featured at 2014 GAMMA-UT Conference
Corey Rubin’s Eulogy for “This Way to the Monkeys”, for clarinet, cello, and piano, was featured at the fourteenth annual GAMMA-UT conference at the University of Texas at Austin on March 29. The work was performed by students from the UT Butler School of Music.

Curtis Smith’s Echoes Premiered at 2014 NASA Convention
The second quartet collaboration between composer Curtis Smith and saxophonist Casey Grev (see photo) was premiered March 22nd, by Grev’s Echo Quartet, at the University of Illinois as part of the North American Saxophone Alliance convention. The quartet is scheduled for performances in April and May at Michigan State University.

Kenji Kuriyama Receives Performance at 2014 SCI National Conference
Kenji Kuriyama’s Redemption was performed at the 2014 SCI National Conference at Ball State University, Sursa Hall on March 23rd.

James Aikman (DM, 1993) to Receive Performance by the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra
James Aikman, who is the current composer-in-residence of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, will receive a performance of his Triptych: Musical Momentum. The performance will take place on Friday, April 11th at 7:30PM at the Schrott Center for the Arts, which is located on the campus of Butler University during their ArtsFest week.
