The University Chorale is a multifaceted choir of singers from across the Jacobs School of Music in a wide variety of majors including voice, piano, organ, guitar, composition, music theory, and music history, among others. The ensemble provides singers the opportunity to learn and perform music of many styles and genres including early music, classical and romantic works, and music composed late into the 20th century. Some semesters as programming dictates, the Chorale is divided to perform as SSAA and TTBB ensembles.
The University Chorale works with both choral faculty and advanced doctoral choral conducting majors under the guidance of choral faculty mentors. Recent doctoral recital repertoire has included Beethoven Mass in C Major, Dvorak Mass in D Major, Benjamin Britten St. Nicolas, Fauré Requiem, the Cherubini Requiem, and Haydn Theresienmesse.
The University Chorale also serves as the core ensemble for the IU Oratorio Chorus, an ensemble that will often combine with the other concert choirs to sing major works on the Musical Arts Center stage with IU orchestras. Numbering anywhere from 150 to 200+ singers, the Oratorio Chorus is directed by a member of the IU conducting faculty and assisted by graduate students in choral conducting. Some major works from recent years have included Britten War Requiem, Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony, Francis Poulenc Gloria, William Walton Belshazzar’s Feast, and most recently Carl Orff Carmina Burana. In the fall semester of 2017, the Oratorio Chorus and IU Philharmonic Orchestra performed the St. Luke Passion by Krzysztof Penderecki under the direction of the composer and conducted by Maciej Tworek. The Oratorio Chorus also performs with visiting professional orchestras, most recently in a performance Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with the Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst.
