Recent doctoral graduate, Dr. Raoul Carlo (Miggi) Angangco, has established a Filipino-American chorus in the San Francisco Bay Area and prepares for its inaugural concert.
LALÒ (LAH-loh or /’la.lo/), under the artistic direction of Dr. Raoul Carlo (Miggi) Angangco, is a new Filipino-American choral ensemble based in the Bay Area. LALÒ brings together seasoned choral artists—singers, composers, conductors—from around the US and abroad, including alumni of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, UP Concert Chorus, Ateneo College Glee Club, Ateneo Chamber Singers, ALERON, University of Santo Tomas Singers, De La Salle University Chorale, Himig Singers, and other acclaimed Philippine choral institutions. Also invited are choral friends and affiliates who are interested in participating in LALÒ’s vision.
From the Tagalog word meaning “more,” “further,” or “greater,” LALÒ aims to contribute to building a society where diversity of cultures and traditions can thrive through singing their stories. The ensemble is committed to honoring the past, championing the present, and envisioning the future in its music-making.
The ensemble’s inaugural offerings this December includes a major concert on December 11, 7pm at the St Robert Catholic Church in San Bruno, CA. Entitled “Panunuluyan: Filipino Choral Music for Advent” after the Filipino Christmas Eve tradition of re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s journeying in Bethlehem, the program of mostly Filipino works will explore themes of continuing a journey, seeking shelter, yearning for home, awaiting dawn, and extending welcome. Composers featured are Augusto Espino, Robin Estrada, John Rutter, Ryan Cayabyab, Caroline Shaw, GP Eleria, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Paulo K Tiról, Karl San Jose (our first WORLD PREMIERE commission based on a 19th-century Filipino villancico), Saunder Choi, Raoul Carlo Angangco, George Frideric Handel, Lucio San Pedro, and George Hernandez.
The group’s December activities will also include a special immersive audio recording session to be led by LALÒ member Jett Galindo––a Grammy award-winning Filipino mastering engineer––will serve as the ensemble’s foray into professional recording.
More information about LALÒ can be found here.
Congratulations Dr. Angangco!
