Our primary consideration in the time of COVID-19 is student safety. There is an online-only version of X70 available for those who are unable to, or who do not wish to participate in face-to-face singing activities.
CHORAL SINGING SPRING 2021 To decrease the number of students in our rehearsal halls, our usual concert choirs are being suspended and replaced by vocal chamber ensembles (VCEs) consisting of 12 or fewer singers. There will also be two 12-voice opera choruses this spring, one for Xerxes, and one for La Bohéme. The choral department sees this as a real opportunity to work with you in a true chamber music format, providing the individual attention other formats don’t allow. Repertoire will be chosen specifically for the singers in each chamber group. The first VCE rehearsal will be Mon., Feb. 22.
PROTOCOLS All Jacobs School choral ensembles will rehearse and perform with 100 sq ft of space per singer, and, following the IU mandate, everyone will wear masks. The vocal chamber ensembles will each rehearse and perform for one three-week period during the semester.
FURTHER ACTIVITY A variety of remote activities, including sessions with guest artists from throughout the choral world, will complete the spring semester choral activities for members of the vocal chamber ensembles and the opera choruses.
SCHEDULES The VCEs rehearse MTR from 3:00 – 3:35 or 4:00 – 4:35 pm, depending upon your assignment. Opera chorus music rehearsals run from 5:00 – 6:35 pm, with a 25-minute break. Details will be provided when chorus assignments are made.
EXPECTATIONS You will have very little rehearsal time for performances this semester—six 35-minute rehearsals and two dress rehearsals over the course of just three weeks. This puts you in a situation that mirrors the professional choral world and you will be expected to prepare your X70 music before and between rehearsals.
