Wind Ensemble meeting times: Monday-Friday, 2:55-4:10, MC066
The Indiana University Wind Ensemble is one of the premier ensembles in the Jacobs School of Music and one of the finest in the nation. The ensemble performs the most outstanding literature on the wind band medium, including music for both chamber winds and large ensembles. The IU Wind Ensemble has premiered many works for wind bands by leading composers. The Wind Ensemble has performed many times at national and international venues, including appearances at the Palladium Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the American Bandmasters Association national convention, the Japan Bandmasters Association convention, the College Band Directors National Association divisional and national conventions, the Music Educators National Conference national convention, and Indiana Music Educators Association conferences, as well as the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2008 MENC National Convention in Milwaukee (WI), at the 2010 CBDNA North Central Division Convention in Normal (IL), at the 2012 ABA Annual Convention in Indianapolis (IN), and in Carnegie Hall at the 2016 New York Wind Band Festival Showcase Concert.
Soloists with the group have included Kevin Bobo, marimba; Bruce Bransby, double bass; James Campbell, clarinet; Chih-Yi Chen, piano; Anthony Cirone, timpani; Jane Dutton, soprano; Peter Ellefson, trombone; Don Freund, piano; Ashley Garritson, cello; Brian Horne, tenor; Steve Houghton, percussion; Carl Lenthe, trombone; William Ludwig, bassoon; Kathryn Lukas, flute; Sylvia McNair, soprano; Steven Mead, euphonium; Otis Murphy, saxophone; Jeffrey Nelsen, horn; Daniel Perantoni, tuba; John Rommel, trumpet; Jonathan Ruck, cello; M. Dee Stewart, trombone; Linda Strommen, oboe; John Tafoya, timpani; Joey Tartell, trumpet; Demondrae Thurman, euphonium; and Thomas Walsh, saxophone.
The group has premiered works by James Beckel, William Bolcom, Eric Ewazen, Don Freund, David Maslanka, Cindy McTee, André Previn, Joel Puckett, Chris Rutkowski, John Stevens, Kevin Walczyk, and David Ward-Steinman.
Former members of the Wind Ensemble are currently performing in many of the world’s leading professional orchestras and the top United States military bands. Others are college and university music department faculty members nationwide or distinguish themselves by teaching music in public schools.
The first rehearsal is on Tuesday, January 21, at 2:55 p.m. Music will be available soon.
