ILS Hosts Movie Night and Student Group Call-out
By Megan Sherry
The Friday before Halloween, the ILS Department hosted an interactive watch party of Scooby-Doo (2002), which became one of ILS’s most highly attended “after hours” events in several years.
The concept of interactive movies is not new, but they are a relatively recent addition to library programming repertoire. They involve pairing activities, snacks, or props with notable parts of the movie as it plays. This Scooby-Doo movie night featured character props for each member of the Mystery Gang, boarding passes to be checked, party poppers, and, of course, Scooby Snacks.
Sophia Congdon, a graduate assistant in the ILS office, was the primary organizer of this event and modeled it after the interactive movies that her local public library developed about 5 years ago. Though those programs were catered toward teen patrons, the concept translated well to graduate students who needed a break from midterms.
“Planning this event was really fun, and I’m glad so many people were able to enjoy it!” said Sophia. “Interactive movies have become a staple in youth programing in the last 10 years. I was excited for the opportunity to adapt it for an older audience.”
In addition to the activities, there were other opportunities for students to get involved in the department. The event began with an ILS student group call-out outside the auditorium. Students were able to sign up for IU chapters of the American Library Association (ALA), Society of American Archivists (SAA), and Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), as well as specialized organizations like the Society for Rare Books and Manuscripts at Indiana University, Students of Music Librarianship, and Society of Art Librarianship Students.
While some of these groups are still operating, the ILS department hopes to revive those that have fallen into inactivity, especially since involvement in these organizations will help students explore and prepare for their careers.
