On December 6, 2019 the Lilly Library building closed for a complete interior renovation. To protect our irreplaceable materials, all items will be carefully removed from the building into secure storage. Soon a majority of the collections will be available in a limited way to researchers at the Herman B Wells Library.
The Lilly Library librarians and experts will continue to work with visiting and local researchers, as well as faculty, to plan ahead for research visits and consults to begin after March 1. Reach out with inquiries and appointment requests through firstname.lastname@example.org. Everyone at the Lilly Library appreciates your patience with our limited access and availability during this once-in-a-generation renovation.
Modifications to space on the 10th floor of the Wells Library East Tower are also beginning. Security is essential to integrating these incredible collections into research and teaching. As protection, access to the materials will be extremely limited until early March 2020 when the space in the Wells Library is complete with required security measures in place.
Lilly staff will be available throughout the renovation and will continue to offer their expertise to the IU community and beyond. There will be changes to current practices. Many frequently used materials will be accessible in a secure reading room at the Herman B Wells Library. Limited space will require that researchers make an appointment, as well as to request access to materials in advance.
Teaching space will also be available in limited capacity, and public services and digitization staff will have office space in this same area. Specifically, the south end of the 10th floor of the East Tower (behind the public elevators) will undergo modifications to create staff space and a Reading Room that will double as a classroom as needed.
Secure storage arrangements will mean that not all materials will be accessible during the renovation. Lilly Library staff are familiar with the needs of researchers and faculty and are developing processes to ensure the highest level of access as rapidly as possible.
