Paul Thomas Anderson’s sprawling character and operatic psychological study Magnolia follows 10 people whose damaged lives intersect during a single day in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley and boasts a deep bench of phenomenal acting talent, including Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, John C. Riley, William H. Macy, and Jason Robards (in what would be his final film). One of Anderson’s most divisive films, Magnolia is a strange, enigmatic, and deeply emotional piece of work you’re not likely to ever forget.
Go behind the scenes of the film with That Moment, a documentary about the making of the movie that was originally a DVD extra; Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2000 appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, where he showed the fake infomercial he shot with Tom Cruise-as-Frank Mackey to air on TV; and Cinema & Beyond’s extensive collection of quotes, videos, and interview excerpts with the cast and crew. For critical appreciations of the film, check out Roger Ebert’s thoughts as part of his Great Movies series, screenwriting legend Syd Field’s praise for the script, and the AV Club’s exploration of the Aimee Mann soundtrack.

“Anderson has dared to make a movie that refuses to conceal its excesses, an amazing abundance of strong emotion, technical verve and pure performance power.” — Robert Denerstein, Denver Rocky Mountain News
Magnolia will be playing at IU Cinema on June 20 at 7pm as part of the I Love the ’90s series.
