12-year-old Bailey (Nykiya Adams) lives with her single dad Bug (Barry Keoghan) and brother Hunter in a squat in North Kent. Bug doesn’t have much time for his kids, and Bailey, who is approaching puberty, seeks attention and adventure elsewhere in this unique coming-of-age story from Oscar-winning filmmaker Andrea Arnold.
An official selection of the 2024 Cannes, Toronto International, and Telluride film festivals, Bird has been praised by such publications as IndieWire, the Guardian, Autostraddle, The Indiependent, and Discussing Film. Go behind the scenes of the film with 92nd Street Y’s interview with Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski and Keoghan’s thoughts on working with Arnold, and Variety‘s discussion with Keoghan and Nykiya Adams.
See it this Thursday and Saturday at IU Cinema! Thanks to our friends at Mubi, we’ll also have 10 Bird prize packs to give away, including a Girls on Tops t-shirt, specialty gummy candy, and a Bird poster. First come, first serve!
“This is what Arnold is so great at capturing: people just doing their best, which often means they surpass every expectation without even knowing it. Her generosity toward her characters is also generosity toward us. She hands us nothing, even as she gives us everything.” — Stephanie Zacharek, Time
Bird will be screened at IU Cinema on February 6 and February 8 as part of the International Art House Series.
