On the first day at his new school, Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) instantly falls for Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), the gorgeous girl of his dreams. The only problem is that Bianca is forbidden to date until her ill-tempered, completely undatable older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) goes out, too. In an attempt to solve his problem, Cameron singles out the only guy who could possibly be a match for Kat: a mysterious bad boy (Heath Ledger) with a nasty reputation of his own.
A modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Look back at the teen classic with recent interviews from director Gil Junger with PEOPLE Magazine and star Julia Stiles with the New York Times, Vogue‘s breakdown of the film’s costumes, Emily Temple’s wonderful Literary Hub essay about how the film changed her life, Salon‘s appreciation of Kat Stratford and her influence on the “angry girl” archetype, and Entertainment Weekly‘s look at how Shakespeare inspired the writers of 10 Things and other rom-coms like She’s the Man and recent blockbuster Anyone But You.

“10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic in the past 25 years because it nailed the universal truth about stereotypes: there’s always more to them than what’s seen on the surface.” — Akos Peterbencze, The Screen
