Official Course Description

Management and administration of all types of libraries. Covers basics of organizational structure, planning, budget management, human resources issues, and an understanding of the manager in the context of the organization.

Instructor’s approach

This course emphasizes the practical nature of management in the library setting. While there will be some theory, the readings and assignments will present the student with concepts and approaches to effective management that the instructor developed, or found to be viable, during a 38.5-year career as a director of public libraries, a multi-type library system and regional public libraries. Effort will be made to include information on all types of libraries. There will be several Zoom sessions where conversation on assigned readings or related topics may take place.

Required textbooks

As this is a short summer course the readings will be found in the following books. Additional resources may be listed as the course progresses. You will note that the major text is available on-line through the IUPUI library. All other readings will be available on-line on the course site.

  • Robert Stueart, Claudia Morner, and Barbara Moran, Library and Information Center Management. Latest edition, 2012. On-line edition available through IUPUI library.
  • Darlene E. Weingand, Managing Today’s Public Library; Blueprint for Change. 1994. I will post chapter on course site.
  • John A. Moorman Ed. Running a Small Library; A How-To-Do-It Manual 2nd Edition. 2015. Chapters assigned are available on-line on course site.
  • Frederick A. Schlipf and John A. Moorman, A Practical Guide to Library Architecture: Creating Building Spaces that Work. To be published by ALA Editions in Fall 2017. Drafts of chapters will be available on-line on course site.

What Tools You Need

The most recent version of a browser. For PC users, you need to have the most recent version of Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. For Mac users, you need to have the most recent version of Safari or the most recent version of either Firefox or Chrome.

The most important tools however, are an inquiring mind, the willingness to contribute to the class through questions and discussions, and getting your assignments done on time.

I prefer to do the course presentation this way. By so doing, it should be easier for the student to find readings and assignments, and know when assignments are due. If at any time, you have questions during the course please contact me via Canvas or at moorman.consult@att.net.

Crown Point Community Library Grant

The Crown Point Community Library received a $76,338 grant from the Crown Point Community Foundation last summer. Why mention it now? Julie Wendorf, the current Adult Programming & Outreach Librarian at the Crown Point Community Library (Crown Point, IN) recently reached out to adjunct Elsa Kramer (soic.iupui.edu/people/elsa-kramer/) to mention the “huge grant I won for our library based in part on the grant I wrote for a library van for your grant writing class during the summer of 2015….I wanted to thank you for an awesome class, and thanks for the great instruction and challenge of creating a ‘grant ready’ project….” For those still enrolling in summer courses, LIS S591 Grant Writing is scheduled again for this Summer II with Elsa Kramer as instructor. View the Recording of the DLIS Colloquium Event on Participatory Heritage and 3D Archiving

On Friday, March 24th the Department held its annual colloquium talk. This year, we highlighted the great interdisciplinary work between DLIS and the Media Arts and Sciences Program along with important community partnerships with Bethel Church, the Indiana State Archives, and Indiana State Library.

The abstract describes the panel talk:

Within weeks of a plan to close the doors on the Indianapolis Bethel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church, faculty and an alumnus from the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI worked to save the historic church’s troves of archival documents and objects.  Out of this significant contribution to the city’s storied past comes something for the future- a virtual 3-D walk-through of the church that will be open for public use- re-created by faculty and students from the School of Informatics and Computing.

Urgent Action Alert: Help Save Federal Library Funding and IMLS!

Please consider taking the time to read the following message from the president of the American Library Association regarding current funding concerns:

Dear ALA member,

The time is NOW!  If you’re a librarian, a library worker, anyone who cares about libraries, does business with a library, or if you depend on your library for accurate information, then your Congressperson needs to hear from you – and at least five more people that you mobilize – TODAY!  At least $210 million in federal library funding is on the budget-cutter’s chopping block. Our champions in Congress need your help to save it and the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the agency that distributes most of those funds to every state in the country. Everything you need is at ALA’s Legislative Action Center now.

As detailed in the ALA Washington Office blog, the President of the United States effectively proposed eliminating all federal library funding and closing IMLS – the small, respected agency that administers $183 million of those funds through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). He also asked Congress to wipe out $27 million for Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL), which school libraries use to buy books and other materials for the nation’s poorest children. But our library champions in Congress have mobilized to fight back and they need your help to succeed.

Today, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ3) wrote to every Member of the House of Representatives asking them to support LSTA, and Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX30), Don Young (R-AK), and Jim McGovern (D-MA2) circulated a similar letter asking support for Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL). Both letters urge their House colleagues to sign letters to the Appropriations Committee supporting library funding. The first so-called “Dear Appropriator” letter asks the Committee to fully fund LSTA in FY 2018 and the second does the same for IAL.

We know from many past funding fights that these Representatives’ requests of their colleagues simply will not be enough. Members of the House need to hear from their constituents before the April 3rd deadline. Please call your Representative and ask them to sign both the LSTA and the IAL “Dear Appropriator” letters our champions have circulated, otherwise the powerful Appropriations Committees will not make LSTA and IAL a priority, dramatically increasing the odds that they will be cut or eliminated next year.

ALA’s Legislative Action Center has everything you – and five of your friends, patrons, relatives, employees and customers – need to identify your  Member of Congress and to tell him or her by email, tweet or phone to sign the LSTA and IAL “Dear Appropriator” letters to protect those critical programs in the FY 2018 federal budget.

We MUST save federal library funding and IMLS!  If not you and your fellow library lovers, who?  If not right now, when?  Please, act right now!
