Job Description Title: Technical Services Librarian
Primary Function:
Under the direction and in conjunction with the Library Director the Technical Services Librarian, supervises, trains, and coordinates the work of support staff, provides technical services for the Westchester Public Library system (including material ordering, receiving, cataloging, catalog maintenance, authority control, and material processing, repairing, withdrawing, and tracking material expenditures), reports any personnel, budget, building maintenance, and security issues to the Director and follows policies established by the Library Board of Trustees, state and federal law, and Westchester Public Library procedures.
Qualifications:
- Willingness and ability to accept responsibility for their own words and actions
- Ability and desire to work well with the public and to work collaboratively with the Library Director, other supervisors and staff
- Supervisory skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently without close supervision
- Good knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration as applied to a major library service
- Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practice, including the Anglo-American cataloging rules, RDA, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress subject headings, OCLC/MARC records, and library automation
- Considerable ability to administer the bibliographic maintenance function and to supervise staff in technical operations
- Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies, and the general public
- Computer proficient and able to use word processing software
- Excellent online searching skills
- Excellent writing, research and speaking skills
- Bachelor?s degree from an accredited college required
- ALA/MLS desired
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Indiana Librarian V Certification
- Willing to work evenings and weekends as necessary
Responsibilities and Duties:
The Technical Services Librarian is responsible to the Library Director for:
- Supervising the operation and maintenance of the Baugher Center
- Participating in the selection of staff, assigning tasks, preparing work schedules; supervising, and training staff
- Ordering and receiving technical services supplies
- Assisting Acquisitions Manager in ordering library materials
- Coordinating technical services operations with library branches to ensure uniform quality of services, material organization and access throughout the district
- Recommending the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards, policies, and authorities in an automated environment, developing procedures for acquiring, cataloging, and processing all library materials
- Participating in in-house library training and continuing education opportunities in order to stay abreast of current practices and procedures and information and trends in public library services
- Representing the library on regional counterpart committees and in other professional and community organizations
- Preparing and delivering statistical and performance reports as assigned
- Attending staff meetings and continuing education opportunities
- Participating in and contributing to state and local library related organizations
- Serving on library committees as assigned, including planning and organizing recognition events for staff and volunteers
- Promoting positive relationships amongst all library departments and with administrative staff
- Performing written evaluations of all staff supervised on an annual basis
- Completing all other tasks as assigned by the Library Director in accordance with the needs of the library
