The National Park Service has two paid archives internships available for fall/winter 2021 working with the NPS History Collection in Charles Town WV. Please see the job description below, which is also in the attached PDF.
Position: Archives Internships – two positions available (1200 hours each)
Location: NPS History Collection, Harpers Ferry Center, Charles Town, WV
Salary: $15.00/hour. Includes 60 hours paid leave and paid federal holidays. Does not include health benefits.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Full time (40 hours per week) preferred but a part time schedule may be possible.
Job Summary: Intern(s) will work with the NPS History Collection archivists to process, arrange, and describe National Park Service records. Interns will assist with research requests, move collections within the facility, and conduct environmental monitoring, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and museum housekeeping in archives storage areas. Training provided in the use of the Interior Collection Management System (ICMS).
Qualifications: Student or recent graduate in archives or closely related degree. Applicants must be enrolled students or have graduated within the past 12 months from the closing date of this announcement. Attention to detail required. Experience with using computer software (i.e., word processing/spreadsheet programs and databases) required. Applicants must possess the ability to present oral and written information in a clear and concise manner. Work requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
Duration: Estimated start date is October 2021, although there is some flexibility depending upon availability and course schedules. Start dates may only be confirmed after background checks have been completed.
Other Requirements: This internship is paid through the National Center for Preservation Education (NCPE). Direct deposit, valid driver’s license, and US citizenship are required. Personal transportation is required as no public transport is available in the area. Successful candidates must pass the National Park Service’s background security investigation process. This process must be started at least one month before anticipated start date and internship cannot start without this clearance. Interns must comply with required federal government COVID-19 protocols. Occasional telework may be necessary to meet possible building occupancy limits due to the pandemic. Telework assignments may vary from the primary duties of the internship as needed.
Other information: Internship may be used for credit, subject to university approval. Housing is not provided but may be found in the local area.
