This position operates independently at a senior subject specialist level providing advanced research expertise within the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
* Responds to in-person, telephone, e-mail, and chat reference questions while staffing Division’s reference desk.
* Participates in acquisition, processing, preservation, digitization, promotion, and use of the Genealogy Division’s resources and services.
* Contributes to the development, management, and promotion of digital resources for the Genealogy Division.
* Provides training to staff and volunteers on special projects.
* Guides patrons in use of library’s collections by recommending materials and resources appropriate to their information needs, explaining library policies, and assisting with computers and library equipment.
* Understands and promotes the mission of the Indiana State Library by highlighting library resources and services by giving building tours, participating in outreach activities, and planning programs and exhibits.
* Participates in professional development activities by attending meetings, workshops, and conferences.
* Creates pathfinders and bibliographic aids in the use of the collections.
* Makes a concentrated effort to keep the collection clean and orderly.
* Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* MLS from an ALA accredited university
* One (1) year fulltime professional experience as a librarian
* Eligibility to be certified by the Indiana State Library and Historical Board as a Librarian 3 or above before granting of permanent status
* Experience working with collection management systems such as CONTENTdm
* General knowledge of all collections and resources within the library’s collections
* Experience working in a special collections and/or digital collections environment
* Ability to develop and deliver presentations and training and coordinate tours and exhibits for the promotion of the Indiana State Library to federal, state and local officials, economic development professionals, business owners, historians, researchers, special population, state universities and other residents of the state and participate in meetings to train users in informational retrieval resources
* Expertise in the use of electronic databases and library automation software
* Ability to communicate effectively, written or orally, for a variety of audiences
* Excellent customer service
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES/DIRECT REPORTS:
Volunteers who work on special projects who are assigned within the employee’s Division
DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
Job requires the ability to prioritize and manage own workflow. Work involves interpersonal communication, customer service skills, and ability to interact with a variety of people. Drawing upon the principles, practices, theories and methods of library and information science, the incumbent must complete work that is broad in scope requiring critical and analytical abilities. Duties require the ability to maintain control, both physical and intellectual, over records of enduring value. Incumbent must be able to understand historical context, use, and relationships of recordkeeping; arrangement and description in accordance with current standards and procedures; and ensure long-term preservation of collection materials. Continuing progress in this field requires considerations to be made as changes develop, creating new and unique circumstances where judgment and compromise are necessary in adapting to new situations and occurrences. Incumbent must analyze complex data to res pond to requests for information from the public. This position requires a Master of Library Science degree and a broad knowledge of Indiana history, the Indiana State Library and other libraries’ resources and services.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs with very minimal supervision from the Division Supervisor in the management of their assigned areas of the library collections. Specific instructions are usually given and work is periodically reviewed. Incumbent will have the ability to make recommendations for improvement, cooperation and coordination of operations within the Division, including resolving problems, occasionally asserting authoritative application of agency policy. These decisions involve analysis, evaluation and interpretation and have far-reaching implications for delivery of library and information services throughout the state. Consequence of errors may have a negative economic impact and adversely affect the agency, local libraries, library networks, and information needs of state agencies.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Work cooperatively with various divisions within the State Library, other State Agencies, the staff from other libraries and historical institutions, students, professors and any other research partners.
Takes a leadership role in cooperative problem solving by participating in staff committees and communicating with superiors.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, re-shelve and shift books, and clean.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Office setting, contact with the public on a regular basis, some travel.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
