The Indiana State Police Laboratory’s Forensic Document Unit (ISPL FDU) is the repository for the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE) National Library (Resource Center). This is a private library for members of the ASQDE and the employees of the Indiana State Police Laboratory. Within the Library is a collection of thousands of articles, which are an accruement of over 100 years of work within the forensic document community. In totality, these articles are an international collection
of reference materials called the Questioned Document Article Database (QDAD).
The FDU is seeking applicants for an intern to work on the QDAD. The selected intern will be requested to verify if an article has been digitally entered into QDAD; if it is complete (every page readable and included); and if not complete to reenter the article by scanning and uploading it into the database. Additionally, the most recent articles produced by the discipline need to be checked for their presence in the QDAD and if not present, cataloged and scanned into the database. The QDAD is accessible via a hosted website of the ASQDE.
An unpaid intern studying library and information science or forensic science are requested to work 10 –20 hours per week between 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for approximately 16 weeks, beginning in August 2019 through December 2019, at the ISPL FDU. The Laboratory is located at 550 West 16th Street, Suite C, Indianapolis, IN. The applicant must seek college credit for this opportunity. The applicant must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test. The intern will be responsible for the cost of the drug test, which is approximately $50 – $100.
The intern will be mentored by the curator of the Library and supervised by the FDU Supervisor. In addition to working on the above-described project, the intern will have hands-on exposure to a large, diverse forensic collection of books, journals, and more. The intern will gain basic knowledge of document preservation. The intern will gain general exposure to forensic document examinations and the other forensic disciplines within the Laboratory. The intern will have an opportunity to observe casework within the FDU. An attempt will also be made to allow the intern to observe actual courtroom testimony of a forensic scientist. Other special opportunities may be available for the intern to work on
in addition to working with the QDAD.

The completed application and current college transcripts must be mailed to the following address by Friday, April 5, 2019. Applications received after April 5th will not be considered. The top candidates will be selected for an interview after that date.
