Internship Title: Archival Intern

Department: Special Collections, Rare Books, and University Archives, Irwin Library

Reports to: Head, Special Collections

Salary: $13 per hour

Start date: January 2, 2019

Projected end date: May 3, 2019

Schedule: Flexible; must be within the hours Special Collections is open, 9:00-4:30 M-F

Internship Summary: This internship is designed for students enrolled in the S605,180-hour (3 credit)internship. We are seeking an enthusiastic Archival Intern who may or may not have previous archival or museum experience, but who is very interested in learning more about the field. He/she should have excellent research, writing, and computer skills, and a broad interest in primary source materials, including actual and digital materials. This internship will provide the prospective candidate with the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience in almost every area of archiving in a mixed-format academic archives; candidates may also gain exposure to library liaison work and information literacy instruction. Applicants should send a letter of application, including areas of archival interest, and an academic writing sample; submission by email is acceptable. (Note: Students applying should have completed 18 hours of coursework prior to the start of the internship.)

Internship job duties and responsibilities may include any of the following:

1. Assisting patrons with reference online, by phone, and in person.

2. Processing collections, including conservation/preservation; boxing and foldering; creating a collection guide; assisting with cataloging or metadata.

3. Working with digital projects (digitizing, assigning metadata, etc.).

4. Assisting with collection development, including selecting and weeding materials in the current collection and in the gift backlog; assisting with donor relations and incoming collections.

5. Assisting with creating exhibits, both actual and digital, from archival sources.

6. Assisting with library liaison duties, information literacy instruction, etc.

7. Attending librarians’ meetings and university committee meetings with the archivist.

8. Assisting with shifting, cleaning, and other collection maintenance duties.

9. Completing other related tasks and projects as directed and assigned by the Head of Special Collections.
