We are excited to share that our degree has a new name – the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) – effective fall 2018. We have chosen to update the title of our degree program to more accurately reflect the focus of study that our students experience training to be experts in library science and data technology. This program is still accredited by the American Library Association and still 100% online. Sometime during the fall, the new program plan code will automatically update in your SIS account. All students graduating fall 2018 or later, will be receiving a MLIS degree from Indiana University.
Our program plan of study has also been updated effective summer 2018. LIS-S401 Computer-Based Information Tools will no longer be required as a pre-requisite course. We have upgraded the course to include more material and are now requiring new students to take LIS-S500 Methods and Tools for the Information Profession.
Current students who started the program prior to Summer 2018: If you have already taken LIS-S401, you are not required to take S500. You are grandfathered/mothered in on the plan of study from when you started the program. If you have not taken S401, then you will need to take S500 as S401 is no longer offered. If you have any questions about this, please contact your academic advisor.
And lastly, we are excited to announce a new specialization in Digital Curation! This specialization will focus on processing, managing, and preserving digital data throughout its lifecycle. More information including the plan of study can be found here: https://soic.iupui.edu/lis/master-library-science/digital-curation/. If you are interested in pursuing this specialization, please contact Dr. Ayoung Yoon at ayyoon@iupui.edu, as some of the foundational courses of this specialization are different than the other plans of study.
Our department strives to be the best in online learning in the field of library and information and will continue to reevaluate our programs in an effort to bring the best education to our students!
