The Black Caucus of the American Librarian Association Scholarship Award Committee seeks written essay or video essay submissions for the 2024-2025 cycle. The scholarships are in honor of Dr. E.J. Josey and Ms. Effie Lee Morris
The topic is: How could Artificial Intelligence negatively or positively reshape the future of librarianship?
Dr. E. J. Josey Scholarship and Ms. Effie Lee Morris Scholarship are unrestricted grants offered to support African American students enrolled in or accepted by ALA-accredited programs. This year the committee will award two $5000 and two $4,000 awards.
Persons Wishing to Apply Must:
Be an African-American Citizen of the United States or Canada
Be enrolled or accepted by an ALA-accredited graduate program leading to a degree in library and information science at the time of application
The winning submission will be announced in February 2025.
Instructions:
The submission should include the applicant’s name, address, phone number, graduate program, name of the school, and anticipated date of graduation.
We will accept a written or video essay on the following topic: How could Artificial Intelligence negatively or positively reshape the future of librarianship?
Written essay submissions must be 3-5 pages in plain text, Microsoft Word format, and must be mailed electronically as an attachment. Please include E.J. Josey in the subject line of your electronic submission. The written essay must be typed and double-spaced. You should include a minimum of six bibliographical references in MLA style.
Video essays must be 5-7 minutes long and may be uploaded to any platform. We recommend double-checking your video’s privacy settings to ensure reviewers will be able to view it during our review process (Examples: YouTube –the video should be set to “unlisted.” Google Drive —link sharing must be turned on). A minimum of six bibliographical references in MLA style should be included in the video or the submission email.

***Please note that if you have been awarded a scholarship from the BCALA Scholarship committee within the past year, you are not eligible to apply for this cycle.***
