The ALI Information Literacy Committee welcomes you to our free virtual event Recognizing the Discipline of Information Literacy: Implications for Academic Libraries on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 11 a.m.
Would the departmental faculty that you work with respond differently if you presented information literacy as a discipline rather than as a set-of-skills or concepts? In this webinar, we will outline the work of the ‘Information Literacy is a Discipline’ (ILIAD) group, which has been presenting at conferences and organizational meetings to discuss the implications of recognizing information literacy as a discipline. We will outline how information literacy aligns with aspects of a discipline, which include being a scholarly community with communication channels, shared ethics, traditions, modes of inquiry, and a body of knowledge and curricula. Attendees will have the opportunity to consider the benefits and challenges of presenting information literacy as a discipline to stakeholders on their campuses. At the close of the session, we will share plans for a forthcoming book to be published by Facet Publishing titled: Information Literacy Handbook: Charting the Discipline, expected to be released in September 2025.
