3 Models: Impacts on the De-escalation Role of Library Social Workers when
Patrons Experiencing Homelessness are in Crisis with Dr Mary Provence
Dr Mary Provence is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Social Work at
Ball State University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with both her
BSW and MSW. Mary has been a social worker for 31 years at both the
micro and macro level. Much of her social work practice has been in
community development in her urban Indianapolis neighborhood where
she has loved, lived, and learned for over 27 years. In her early career, she
spent four years as an outreach social worker on the streets of Indianapolis
with youth experiencing homelessness. That experience combined with her
desire for social justice, and her love of libraries fuels her passion for
library social work. Mary is an avid researcher of the emerging field of
public library social work as a response to homelessness.
Abstract
This presentation will compare three different models of social work practice within urban central libraries in the United States and examine how each model impacts the role social workers play in deescalating crises situations affecting patrons experiencing homelessness. Presenting a portion of the data from an embedded multiple-case study across three libraries with 107 distinct participants collected through 91 surveys and 46 in-depth Zoom interviews, this discussion will reflect the perspectives of six different roles: patrons experiencing homelessness, front-facing library staff, library police/security, chief executive officers, branch managers, and social workers.
