Current salary is $12 per hour.
Purpose of Position/Summary:
This position will serve as a Library Services Seasonal Worker for the Multimodal Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The seasonal worker will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The successful applicant will report to Venetta Keefe.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Seeking a second year Technical Services or Archival Management library science student to complete an information service project for the Rail Service (RPO) Department. The selected candidate will create a cataloguing system for rail documents including Passenger Rail, Reference Materials, Code Administration and Grants. There are more than 4,000 documents in this cataloging project.
• The Rail Programs office is the regulatory department for the rail industry in the state, and as such has a statutory responsibility to maintain certain documents and records.
• Project can be used as a practicum or capstone project and is eligible for academic credit as LIS 606
• Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
• Working towards a master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences with a Technical Services, Archives Management or related specialization
• Relevant work experience preferred
• Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT (provided)
• Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
• Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
• Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports.
• Analytical skills
• Ability to handle multiple projects.
• Ability to operate computer programs. (Will want specific program here; we’ll make it clear they can learn the interface, but they already need basic skills with database design)
• Good research and writing skills.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
• Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
Difficulty of Work:
The Intern’s work is broad in scope and requires the ability to work with many different individuals. The work requires the strong ability to manage one’s own time and to adequately prioritize job responsibilities.
Students taking on projects and internships need a minimum of 18 hours finished. This is a highly technical project, and will need to have completed the following:
S504 Cataloging, S531 Advanced Cataloging (desirable but not required)
S511Database Design OR S512 Information Systems Design
S532 Advanced Resource Management OR S534 Metadata
Responsibility:
The Intern will be responsible for creating a catalogue of documents stored in our electronic records management system. The intern will be assigned specific projects and work assignments. Work and recommendations will be made to the supervisor.
Personal Work Relationships:
Duties will necessitate working closely with co-workers and potentially individuals outside the agency.
Physical Effort:
Position does not require any effort greater than normal office duties.
Working Conditions:
Primarily a remote cloud environment, after several in-person meetings.
While this is a remote work experience, candidate must live in Indiana.
