The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is pleased to announce a nine-month, graduate-level internship in Archives. This position is being generously funded through a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant. The internship is expected to run from Sept. 2022-May 2023 for an average of 24 hours/week.
The NEH Archives Intern will focus on cataloging and preserving the archival collection of a Virginia-born, African American artist. This archival collection will be directly related to an upcoming exhibition. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to expand their professional skills as a librarian, archivist, collections manager, or other related position and will have the opportunity to participate in the arrangement, description, and preservation of archival collections in the VMFA Library.
The intern will be able to attend meetings and staff activities to gain a fuller understanding of the various functions of the Library as well as projects with related departments such as Conservation, Education, and Curatorial. At the end of the internship, the intern will deliver a presentation about their work to an invited audience of VMFA staff.
Salary
$18.00/hour
Minimum Qualifications
This internship is designed for a graduate student who is pursuing studies in an accredited master’s program in library science, museum studies, or art history.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience in using archival collections in a library or archives environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with little onsite supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate should be enrolled in an accredited graduate program, and should have a bachelor’s degree in art history, American history, studio arts, and/or related humanities field.
Special Requirements
Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
